The aspect of the Menendez story that ought to send shivers up the spines of all libertarians

Dr. Melgen (allegedly) used ties to Menendez to threaten other South Fla. Doctors with Fed Gov. oversight of their practices

by Eric Dondero

Buried near the end of a very extensive and well-investigative report this morning by the Washington Post, "Sen. Menendez contacted top officials in friend’s Medicare dispute" is this paragraph:
In Florida, it was more threatening, several doctors in the South Florida region recounted. After one local eye surgeon criticized Melgen’s treatment methods in discussions with other Florida doctors, Melgen warned that he had important friends in the Senate, including Menendez, said two doctors familiar with the exchange. They said Melgen cautioned that his Washington friends could arrange an intensive federal audit of the surgeon’s practice. (Emphasis added.)

A Senator who could easily write a letter of interest to IRS officials or officials in the FDA sparking an investigation of a Florida doctor adversary of his friend Dr. Melgen?

Los Angeles Mayor and hot Latin lover Villaraigosa ensnared in the growing scandal

In other developments this morning, photos have surfaced of Menendez with his arm around Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. The mayor has had quite an interesting history with sexual escapades in recent years, including an affair with a married Latina TV reporter, and rumored recreational sex trips to Mexico City and Baja California.

Finally, our friend Stacy McCain of TheOtherMcCain blog, has this brilliant analysis in his piece from last night, "Is Senator Menendez Doomed?":
Attempts by certain liberal journalists (e.g., Chris Cillizza of the Washington Post) to minimize the seriousness of this scandal will prove ineffectual, because if Senator Menendez tries to hang on, it might inspire greater scrutiny to other politicians connected to Dr. Melgen, and those other politicians don’t need that scrutiny.
This is precisely what we said here at LR two days ago. Once the scandal starts moving towards other top Democrats, and other Democrat officials start feeling a little threatened, Menendez will be forced to resign.

Villaraigosa is a big fish. But more importantly, Inside-the-Beltway pols need to be entrapped in the scandal.

Hint: Menendez headed up the DSCC for 4 years, and he raised tons of dollars for a number of top Dem Senators during that time. Any contributions from Melgen?

According to the FEC reports, he's made huge contributions to a bunch of Democrat pols, and to various Democrat committees and PACs, over the years -- and not just in Florida, either.

The glaring exception is Barack Obama (he contributed the max to Hillary Clinton and Christopher Dodd's presidential campaigns in 2008).

Wow. That's interesting. Good work.

Figures. Chris Dodd. What a slimeball.
