As every Texan knows Austin is the one city in the State where they like to keep things "weird." And weird can be translated to cosmopolitan ultra-liberal non-redneck "we're better than the rest of Texas" attitudes.
That uppity culture was sure on display last week, when Scott Hensen a self-described "stereotypical redneck looking dude," was walking out of an entertainment complex with his granddaughter, 5-year old Ty. Well, Ty is black. And that sparked some curious looks from other entertainment patrons, and at least one 9/11 phone call to the local authorities.
Hensen describes what happened next on his blog Grits for Breakfast:
The officers got out with Tasers drawn demanding I raise my hands and step away from the child. I complied, and they roughly cuffed me, jerking my arms up behind me needlessly. Meanwhile, Ty edged up the hill away from the officers, crying. One of them called out in a comforting tone that they weren't there to hurt her, but another officer blew up any good will that might have garnered by brusquely snatching her up and scuttling her off to the back seat of one of the police cars. (By this time more cars had joined them; they maxed out at 9 or 10 police vehicles.)Comments American Thinker's David Paulin in his column, "White grandfather with black granddaughter provokes 911 calls"
Austin, ironically, is a bastion of liberal politics where the political ideology of diversity is given much lip service. Yet it's also a place where in some areas, a white grandfather can't hold hands with his black granddaughter without arousing the sort of suspicions that once occurred in in the Jim Crow South. And of course, if this had happened in reverse, a black soul-brother looking grandfather holding the hand of a little blond-haired white granddaughter; police responding with taser guns on stand-by, imagine the outrage in the national media. As it is, there's no glaring headlines at Yahoo News, on MSNBC, CNN, HuffPo, Daily Beast or even Fox.
(Two news outlets, the NY Daily News and the London Telegraph did cover the story.)
But hey, welcome to the new politically correct America, where you're judged guilty simply by the color of your skin.
Update! According to the Austin American-Statesman the Austin police dept. is refusing to apologize for the incident.
