From Eric Dondero:The Statehood issue came up the other night at the debate. Rick Santorum said he'd go along with whatever Puerto Ricans decided for themselves. However, Wolf Blitzer quickly moved on and none of the candidates got a chance to answer the question directly.
Mitt Romney yesterday, addressed it head-on at the Hispanic Networking Leadership conference in Miami. The former Massachusetts Governor endorsed Statehood for Puerto Rico.
Via Fox:
"I expect the people of Puerto Rico will decide, like he feels, to become a state, and I can tell you that I will work with him that if that vote comes out in favor of statehood we will go thru the process in Washington to provide statehood to Puerto Rico."The same day, PR's Republican Governor Luis Fortuño endorsed Romney, saying:
[he would] "provide economic stability for generations"Puerto Rico will hold a referendum on Statehood in November.

Romney hasn't thought this through, or he doesn't care about the future of his own party. If PR became a state, it gets two Senators. Those Senators will almost certainly be Democrats. The balance of power in the Senate is delicate enough without tipping it in favor of your political enemies.
@Randian: Puerto Ricans, like myself, are independent minded. I personally believe in the conservative movement. Track record in Florida proves that if Puerto Rico would become a State, we would be a swing state, but I highly beleive that after we mature politically we could be wooed by the Republican Party:

I welcome you to read a column I recently wrote and analyze it for yourself.
"I personally believe in the conservative movement."
Fine as it goes, Ed, but we're interested here in the majority of PR's who are not, in fact, rugged individualists in the libertarian or conservative mold. It isn't about whether PR's will one day "mature" politically and be "wooed" by RINO's.
It is about the sorry mess that is the Democratic dominance and statist expectations of the majority of a small population that will be granted two reliably Leftist senators.
It is about saving our Constitution and the country from rampant statism and power centralization in the short term and the long term.
PR's are "Independent minded" you say Jusino? So how is the Libertarian Party faring in PR?
I would much rather that PR "go Galt" and decide to become it's own independent nation under Liberty. I'd emigrate to PR if that happened.

Really? I'd bet an independent PR wouldn't be so good on second amendment issues. Too hot there for me and I've lived on an island most of my life. PR is more isolated from mainland. :( I can see myself moving west to a more libertarian state someday.
Must haves:
Low or non-existent property and/or personal income taxes.
Shall Issue CCW with no or little restrictions, open carry a good thing too.
Strong Castle Doctrine.
No red light/speeding/state owned surveillance cameras.
Tolerable weather for an aging big guy.
I could add more I suppose...
Really? I'd bet an independent PR wouldn't be so good on second amendment issues
Is there anywhere in the Carribean that would be? So far as I can tell they're reliably "no guns for the common man". Only the politically connected can own guns and get concealed carry permits.
