Another Democrat Tough Guy Says to a female Republican state legislator "You are f***ing dead!"

by Clifford Thies

WTMJ reports that Wisconsin state representative Gordon Hintz (Democrat scumbag from Oshkosh) turned to a female colleague, Michelle Litjens (also of Oshkosh) after a budget vote and said "You are f***ing dead!".

WTMJ notes that the scumbag is currently under investigation for prostitution, having been issued a citation in conjunction with frequenting the Heavenly Hands Massage in Appleton. Not that paying for sex s necessarily a bad thing.

His bio indicates that his entire work history consists of various government sector jobs. Not that working for the government is necessarily a bad thing.

But, we do notice a pattern don't we: being a Democrat, working for the government, verbally attacking a woman, and paying for sex.

Sounds like another Democrat with issues. How many more violent-prine Democrats will it take before the pattern is noticed by others?

Michelle Litjens, on the other hand, is typical of Republicans first elected to public office in 2010. A small business person, member of the NFIB, the NRA, and the NRTL. And, did I mention, an hispanic elected as a Republican from a majority "white" district.

No wonder the scumbag flew off the handle. People like Michelle Litjens are supposed to know that they are too poor and ignorant to live their lives as free persons. They need the government to take care of them. Freedom is only for the elite few.

Remember, we have been warned. President Obama says "when they bring a knife, we bring a gun." The union thugs, radical environmentalists, socialists and their assorted fellow travelers and clients aren't about to simply go away. According to them, they have a right to our money, and why should anything like an election prove otherwise.

In Minnesota sharp differences between Dem Gov. and Republican Legislature on Budget

From Eric Dondero:

After Wisconsin, neighboring Minnesota may be headed for a major showdown over the state budget. But this time it's a Democrat Governor going against a Republican-majority legislature.

From KSRO.com "Minn. deficit shrinks; Dayton drops income surtax":
The governor and the GOP-controlled Legislature are split on how to handle the shortfall, with Dayton pushing for new high-end income and property taxes and Republican leaders vowing to erase the deficit through spending cuts.

Republicans are expected to outline their budget plan by the end of March. They adamantly oppose Dayton's push to raise taxes and vowed to set a budget that spends no more than current projected tax collections.

"We're going to live within the 33-and-a-half billion that we now have to spend," said House Speaker Kurt Zellers, R-Maple Grove.

MAJOR NEWS!!! Wyoming House Rejects Tougher Seat Belt Law

A New #1 Free State?

From Eric Dondero:

Free Staters will tell you that New Hampshire is the most "libertarian" State in the Country. But they may now have to fight for that title.

The Wyoming House of Reps just firmly rejected an attempt by Nanny-Staters to impose a primary offense standard for seat belt law violations.

From Casper Trib.com:
A bill that would have increased the penalty for drivers who fail to buckle their seat belts failed in the Wyoming House on Tuesday.

The roll call vote on Senate File 51 was 35-21.

The bill would have increased the fine for failing to buckle up from $25 to $75.

Wyoming has a secondary seat belt law meaning drivers cannot be stopped solely for failing to buckle up, but can be cited if stopped for traffic violations.

Current law allows drivers who are stopped for traffic violations a $10 credit against their fine if they have buckled their seat belt.
One Republican legislator gave primary offense seat belt laws a rather unique name. Continuing:
Rep. Mark Semlek, R-Moorcroft, called the bill "nanny-gate" legislation and more government interference.
Nanny-gate as in a gateway to ever increasing infringements on our individual liberties.

NeoCon David Frum, PaleoCon Lew Rockwell win Top Spots for Appeasing Radical Islam

The Rise of the Weak-on-Defense Cons

From Eric Dondero:

It's not often that Lew Rockwell and David Frum are thought of in the same ideological grouping. But to pro-defensers they are essentially two sides of the same coin. They may start from entirely different areas of the spectrum, but they both end up in the same exact weak-on-defense side.

Chris Queen a national security conservative from Georgia has penned the First Top Ten List of Islamapologist Blogs at Newsreal.

Making the list are many Left Blogs such as HuffPo, Daily Kos, and CNN, of course. But Rockwell and Frum also make the list and are normally considered "Right."

Excerpts from Queen's descriptions of the Top Ten, in spot Number 3:
Sometimes Islamapologism doesn’t just come from the Left. You can even find it on the Right, believe it or not. One prime example can be found at FrumForum.

Apparently for one of the site’s bloggers, “modernization and renewal” means sucking up to Islamists and defending their right to attempt to destroy us.

Frum actually refers to those expressing concern over [Grover Norquist friend and C-PAC board member] Suhail Khan as “(mis)representing some very minor personalities as central figures in a giant continuing conspiracy.” Frum intimates that Khan’s dangerous associations are nothing to be worried about. Yet the truth is, we simply cannot ignore what Frum sees as “minor.”
Rockwell and Frum, little if any difference on Foreign Policy

And in the Number 2 position...
Possibly one of the most mystifying websites I’ve seen in a long time is the one run by anti-American libertarian Lew Rockwell.

Scratch the surface (which is not-so-charmingly retro, looking like a relic from 1996), and you’ll discover a radical libertarian site with plenty of vitriol toward America’s defense, especially when it comes to radical Islam.
Justin Raimondo lashed out at conservatives for being intolerant toward those who are bent on destroying our freedom and our way of life:
In more 9/11 anniversary news: a rally sponsored by the David Horowitz-affiliated “Jihad Watch,” in alliance with Pamela “Shrieking Harpy” Geller’s “Stop the Islamization of America” grouplet and the British neo-fascist “English Defense League,” attracted a few thousand wackos to a site a few blocks from Ground Zero, where uber-wacko Geert Wilders (Dutch neo-fascist and leading Islamophobe) made the case for banning Islam…

Wilders, Geller, and “Jihad Watch” anti-Islam guru Robert Spencer want to import Europe’s Muslim-hating racist fringe to America: their thesis is that Islam is not a religion, but a political conspiracy to impose Sharia law on non-Muslims. They raise the specter of an Islamic States of America, with American women draped in the chador and mandatory mosque attendance — a scenario that doesn’t even qualify as credible science fiction.
Isn’t it comforting to know that there are people out there who think of those of us who don’t want to live under the thumb of Islam as “kooky”?
You have to wonder why Frum and Rockwell are even considered Right?

Lone Libertarian, Tea Party activist stands up to Socialists in Wisconsin

Tea Party favorite Hermann Cain wins Straw Pool for 2012

Beats all the top contenders

Bill Belew at Examiner.com">The Examiner reports "Herman Cain wins straw poll at Phoenix TEA Party conference":
Herman Cain is a conservative talk show host. He looks like he is the best pick at the latest straw poll in Phoenix. On Friday, February 25, 2011, the American Policy Summit presidential straw poll selected Herman as their winner with 22% of the votes.

Many bloggers agree with the people who were actually attending the conference that Herman Cain definitely has a lot more charisma and presence that either Ron Paul or Tim Pawlenty who were the other two candidates that showed up at the meeting.

Safety when a Food Crisis strikes

Hi, my name's Dustin Merritt, and as a father and a husband I've always been worried about the safety of my family in case a food crisis strikes.

Like anyone else, I guess, I'm hoping that it's never going to happen to me. But just in case it does happen, I want to make sure that my family is prepared.

I've been looking for something that is...
•Better than storing dollar bills under my pillow. It's obvious. When a crisis strikes, food is going to be worth literally more than gold, and money under my pillow is going to turn into paper that I can't eat.
•Better than stockpiling food in my freezer. Since a food crisis can last for years, it's way too expensive to set up a whole freezing room that would have the capacity to store enough food for a family. Even just for one year.

•Better than buying canned beans. I don't know about you. But I don't want to find myself eating nothing but beans day after day. I'd like to be able to vary my menu.
•Better than any other method of safeguarding food that I know of. By the way, if you know an interesting way to preserve food over long periods of time, please let me know
I've been looking for a backup way to live off my land completely self-sufficient and independent from the outside world during a food crisis.

That's how I came up with something so amazing that I just can't wait to share with you.

I've created it for myself. I'm using it myself, and I'm sure you're going to love it.

It's an Emergency Seed Bank, and it enables you to plant your very own 1-acre victory garden year after year regardless of the economic conditions. It's guaranteed to stay on guard against any food shortage for the next 10 years, and is capable of producing a virtually unlimited amount of food for years to come.
•Designed specifically for an emergency growing situation. Emergency Seed Bank combines the best types of emergency seeds with superior packaging into a product you can depend on.
•Buy once, use as many times as you need. Emergency Seed Bank includes only non-hybrid seeds, which means that every year your victory garden will produce seeds you can use next year...
•All-natural. Free from genetic modification, these seeds are just as pure as they possibly can be.
•Hard to find. One package combines a variety of seeds, all of which are produced by small, independent farmers, and are among the hardest ones to get.
•Your garden will flourish in any region within the U.S. Your Emergency Seed Bank will grow in any of the 11 climate zones across the country.
•High seed germination rate is guaranteed for 10 years.

Egyptian Army opens fire on Coptic Christian church

American media not covering attempted Massacre

From Eric Dondero:

It is still unclear as to what provoked the attack. Some say a dispute as to the location of a fence and gate surrounding the Monastery.

But Egytian Army opened fire on the Christian Church, seriously injuring several Coptic Christians and injuring one Priest who had a wound to the chest.

Violent confrontation begins at 1:40 minutes in.

Virtually no American media have covered this story. Only the foreign press is reporting on it.

Other election watchers catch on: Fine Gael-Labor coalition may not happen

by Clifford F. Thies

The implications of the massive electoral win by Fine Gael, a center-right party, in the just conducted Irish elections are only now starting to dawn on the left-wing media: A Fine Gael-Labor coalition may not happen.

Fine Gael is close enough to a majority that it may organize a majority coalition with a handful of center-right independent or a minority government with the support of such independents and/or Fianna Fail. In any case, because of its strong bargaining position, it will not share much power with Labor even if it were to bring Labor into government.

Of course, we, at Libertarian Republican, were on top of this possibility right from the start.

The Independent of Ireland, which projects that Fine Gael will wind up with 77 seats, 7 short of a majority, reports that a newly-elected indepedent member of the national assembly says that there are eight center-right members who will support a Fine Gael government. The Independent identifies a total of eleven center-right members it considers amendable to some sort of arrangement. There is also the
possibility of a few party-switchers from Fianna Fail to Fine Gael, if not a wholesale crossover.

With many more center-right members of the national assembly than needed to form a government. the chances of a hold-up, as happened in Australia late last year, are remote. In Australia, two of three independents thought to lean to the right, supported Labor in forming government in return for pork barrell-like considerations. Thus, the politicians snatched victory away from the people in a back-room deal.

The prospect of a unified center-right in the Republic of Ireland may go well beyond the organization of the next government. In Ireland, as in Scotland and Wales, the nationalist parties have traditionally been socialist, against free trade, and radical on the cultural issue. A unified center-right in the Republic of Ireland can present an alternate path to political devolution in the United Kingdom and unification of the island of Ireland. A path of devolution and unification combined with a market-oriented economy domestically, free trade internationally, and a culture that free and open to the world.

This time of financial crisis may also be one of enormous opportunity.

MAINE: LePage to move "forcefully ahead" with Right-to-Work

No requirements that you have to join a Union

From Ben Smith's column at Politico:
Maine Gov. Paul LePage said Saturday he would push forcefully ahead with right-to-work legislation in his state, even if it means a Wisconsin-style fight with unions.

In an interview at the National Governors Association, the Republican praised Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and couched his own proposal in the language of liberty loved by tea partiers.

"He's got a big challenge, and quite frankly, once they start reading our budget they're going to leave Wisconsin and come to Maine because we're going after right to work," LePage told POLITICO.

"I believe that the Declaration of Independence says 'life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,'" he said. "Whenever someone forces me to do something against my will, they're infringing upon my freedoms and my liberties. And that's what I think we're doing in Maine when we have fair share, which means that you are required to belong to a union, you're required to pay dues but you don't want to participate. I find that to be against everything the United States of America stands for."
Editor's note - I'm proud to say I served as a volunteer campaign worker in LePage's campaign last October in Lewiston.

Todd Palin edged out in Iron Dog competition

Huntington/Olds take First Place

From Cliff Thies:

Tyler Huntington and Chris Olds edged Todd Palin and Eric Quam by 2 minutes in the2011 Iron Dog (snowmobile race) in Alaska, repeating their first place finish of last year. The race takes place over a grueling, 2,000 mile course stretching from Big Lake, near Wasilla, to Nome. The event, which involves about 40 hours of racing, takes place over several days due to rest breaks. It is a grueling test of man and machine, often under estremely hazardous conditions in isolated parts of Alaska's vast frontier.

According to KTUU:
The top five money winners in the 2011 Iron Dog were: #10 Huntington/Olds, #11 Palin/Quam, #7 Davis and Davis, #21 Branholm and Spernak, #14 McKenna and Van Meter.
Todd Palin, a four time winner, is of course the husband of Sarah Palin and father of dancing sensation Bristol Palin.

WASHINGTON STATE: Libertarian Republicans now a statistical area for Re-districting?

Pierce County hotbed for libertarian Republicans?

From Eric Dondero:

Believe it or not, legislators may now be considering the libertarian flavor of counties in redistricting decisions for congressional re-mapping.

From the Tacoma News-Tribune:
“A couple changes here or there and those close districts aren’t so close any more,” said Kevin Carns, director of the House Republican Organizational Committee.

But Carns said the biggest question he’s asking is where voters who are now in the Republican-leaning 2nd Legislative District end up.

That district, running from Rainier and Yelm in Thurston County to McKenna, Roy and Graham in Pierce County, was the state’s fastest-growing. The Republican-to-libertarian-flavored area grew by 36 percent and now has 26,471 persons more than the target.

That means it must shrink in geographic size – perhaps pulling out of southeast Thurston County entirely
State GOP Chair Kirby Wilbur, (former Seattle radio talk show host), said he expects Dems to play fair. Continuing:
State Republican chairman Kirby Wilbur said he suspects the new 10th District would end up in northeast King County, where he makes his home. That would push Reichert’s district south into more reliably Republican territory and move heavily Democratic Olympia into Smith’s district from freshman GOP Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler’s, benefiting all three lawmakers.

“What we’re going to end up with is maybe four good (Republican districts), four good (Democratic districts) and maybe two in the air,” said Wilbur. “That would be fair. I would take that.”

Licensing requirements in New Hampshire may get scaled back, thanks to libertarian Republican legislators

Freedom of Choice for NH Consumers

From Eric Dondero:

New Hampshire State Rep. Carol McGuire, a longtime member of the Republican Liberty Caucus, is the co-sponsor of a bill that would eliminate licensing requirements for trades which receive no compensation.

From the Manchester Union-Leader "License abolition measure draws crowd of 200" Feb. 25:
HB 450, that would only require licenses for barbers, cosmetologists and estheticians if they work for compensation.

She said current law makes criminals of people who cut hair or fingernails for friends and neighbors, or who volunteer for charity.
Another similar Bill now in committee would end regulation completely of a whole host of such activities from "barbers to hunting."
Rep. Spec Bower, R-Georges Mills, wanted to abolish licensing for barbers, tanning facilities, landscape architects, court reporters, family mediators, guides, athletic trainers, massage therapists and peddlers and itinerant vendors.
Nanny-Staters cry foul

Last Tuesday, a crowd of 200 attended the committee hearings, both pro and con.

Continuing:
Rep. Andrew Manuse, R-Derry, favors passing the bill as it is written.

"I recently had a haircut. I didn't like it. I won't go back," he said.

Consumers should vote with their feet if they're not happy with services, he said.

Licensing creates a false sense of security, Manuse argued, and "does not benefit innovation or the free market system."
Predictably, the ultra-left newspaper the Nashua Telegraph editorialized against the bills, calling them "hair-brained ideas." On the reasoning behind the legislation:
From what we can tell, because consumers should have the opportunity to decide for themselves whether they want to employ the services of a licensed professional.
The left Boston Herald said pretty much the same thing:
House Bill 446, currently before the New Hampshire Legislature, would eliminate state licensing for a slew of professions from barbering, cosmetology and aesthetics to reflexologists, structural integrators and Asian bodywork therapists.

It is far from responsible governance to believe the average consumer could walk into the local beauty salon and have the knowledge and expertise -- let alone time -- to ask all the right questions of the hairdresser.
Of course, consumers are not smart enough to make their own decisions. Better to have Nanny-State government there holding their hand to guide the way.

Two Major Media confirm LR's discovery of Aldawsari's lovesick obsession with Sarah Rice Stender

LR FOLLOW-UP

Both the NY Post and UK Daily Mail pick up on Lovesick Saudi Terrorist angle

From Eric Dondero:

Late Wednesday, hours after the Saudi - Texas Terrorist Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari story broke, LR along with Stacy McCain of TheOtherMcCain connected the dots to Sarah Rice Stender at Vanderbilt University.

We wrote here at LR early Thursday morning, "Confirmed! Aldawsari attended Vanderbilt in Tenn. from Oct. 2008 to Aug. 2009":
Stacy McCain and Libertarian Republican were the very first media in the entire Nation to connect the dots late last night, to a crush Aldawsari had on a Vanderbilt co-ed Sarah Rice Stender. (Photo from her Facebook Page). However, it was unclear how Aldawsari could have met her since she was at Vanderbilt, not Texas Tech.

Now, the Star-Telegram has confirmed his residency and other media confirmed his student status at Vanderbilt in Nashville.
Classmates describe "A loner," liked Bin Laden, wished for Martyrdom

And now this from the New York Post "Tour of evil duty
'Doll-bomber' scouted targets on NYC trip" Feb. 26:
Classmates of Aldawsari -- who prosecutors say was inspired by bin Laden's rhetoric as a boy in Saudi Arabia -- described him as a loner.
He sporadically posted on his blog, "FromFarAway," an odd mix of Arabic prayers and wishes for martyrdom, and mused about watching "Resident Evil" trailers on YouTube.

Studying English as a second language at Vanderbilt University, he fell in love with his conversation partner, Sarah Rice Stender, a 58-year-old former professor of medicine at the Nashville, Tenn., school.

"She is [so] gorgeous that I can't forget her just right away . . . I am asking Allah the Great to convert her to Islam and marry me," he wrote in 2009.

Stender did not return a call for comment.
Obviously, the Post gets the "58-year-ld former professor of medicine" part wrong.

Stender's Facebook Page taken down

The UK Daily Mail confirms it is indeed the woman in the photo that we broke here at LR, by running the same photo with their story, "Saudi terror suspect loved ultra-violent video game," and adds:
Aldawsari, who was arrested Wednesday and charged with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction, also blogged about his love for Sarah Rice Stender, the student who helped teach him English

Miss Rice Stender was listed as one of Aldawsari's Facebook friends.
So, we scooped both the NY Post and the UK Daily Mail. LR's piece is the second link to come up on Google seach for "Sarah Rice Stender." So, there's little doubt where the Post and Daily Mail got this news from. Though, we did not receive any link or acknowledgement in either article.

One final intriguing note: Sarah Rice Stender's Facebook Page has been taken down.

More Muslim Violence against Coptic Christians in Egypt

Priest stabbed to death in his Home

From Eric Dondero:

We have been following the story of the continuing violence by Muslims on Christians in Egypt since the downfall of Mubarak.

See LR "Reports... At least 11 Christians killed by Muslim extremists in Egypt, including Children" Feb. 3.

Now this, from the Winnipeg Free Press "Coptic Christian priest killed in Egypt" Feb. 25:
ASSIUT, Egypt - A Coptic Christian priest has been killed in southern Egypt, triggering street demonstrations by several thousand Christians.

The priest was found dead in his home. A fellow clergyman, Danoub Thabet, says his body had several stab wounds. He says neighbours reported seeing several masked men leaving the apartment and shouting "Allahu akbar," or "God is great," suggesting the killing was motivated by the divide between Egypt's Muslims and its minority Coptic community.
The American media is giving very scant coverage to this story.

Gaza: Fundamentalism in the Extreme

Religous Police on every Street Corner: "Show us your papers please"

From Eric Dondero:

A spokesman for Hamas Yousef Rizka, a senior government official in Gaza, told the London Telegraph, Yousef Rizka: "We respect freedom."

According to the Telegraph, "Gaza's elected Islamist rulers crack down on secular community" the List of some activities now banned by Hamas in Gaza, include:
1. Novels it deems offensive to Islam

2. Bars

3. Cinemas

4. Women walking outside in Western clothes

5. Male hairdressers
From the Telegraph:
In recent years, hardliners have burned down the cinemas. Their charred remains are still visible in Gaza City. Militants blew up the last bar in 2005.

Gaza women, whose attire once varied from Western pants and skirts to colourful traditional embroidered robes, began donning ankle-length loose robes.
And don't even dare walking outside with your wife without the correct documentation.

Continuing:
Today, plainclothes officers sometimes halt couples in the streets, demanding to see marriage licenses.
Editor's comment - You gotta ask, where are the US Libertarians on this? Why the silence? Why no outcry from so-called Civil Liberties advocates in the United States? Where are they?

UK "Mums" on Welfare cleverly swap Milk Vouchers for Booze and Cigarettes

MOOCHER WATCH!

From Eric Dondero:

Four years ago, the Labour Party introduced an expansion of the Mother's Milk program to include fruits and vegetables. Over 600,000 women currently receive the taxpayer-subsidized government hand-out.

From the UK Telegraph "New mothers swap fruit vouchers for booze and cigarettes":
Now a Government survey of more than 2,000 retailers, health professionals and recipients has found that more than one in five knew of occasions when shops had swapped the tokens for products outside the scheme... trading vouchers for alcohol and cigarettes.
Limited government advocates in the UK are steaming. Continuing:

Emma Boon, campaign director of The TaxPayers’ Alliance, urged the Coalition to abolish the scheme.

She said: “All these endless handouts from the nanny state do nothing but encourage shameless behaviour from those in society who would rather spend money on cigarettes and alcohol than on their own children.”

“It’s naive of the Government to give out these vouchers and expect the scheme to have an impact on how much healthy food mums or mums-to-be are buying. This misguided programme is wasting taxpayers’ money and should be scrapped.”

Scholarship for a New Minority Group in Texas: White Males

Those Crazy Caucasians

From Clifford F. Thies:

A group calling itself the "Former Majority Association for Equality" is offering scholarships for white males at Texas State at San Marcos. Applicants must carry at least a 3.0 GPA and be at least 25 percent caucasian.

Not quite in the same league as Bill Gates' Billionium Scholarship Fund, open to anyone who is not white, the group hopes to raise enough money to award five scholarships of $500 each.

As to who qualifies as "caucasian," the organization says anybody whose lineage is at least 25 percent caucasian. Let's see. That would include such disadvantaged Americans as Halle Barry, Tiger Woods, Derek Jeter and, of course, President Obama.

Next on the agenda? Caucasian Heritage Month, Caucasian Entertainment Television, Caucasian Studies?

Former MADD President in Florida blows a .239, well over the Legal Limit

Before and After

From Eric Dondero:

MADD was the main nationwide proponent of lowering the legal limit from the normally accepted .01 (basically 2 1/2 beers an hour), to .08.

One past president of MADD was way over .01, let alone .08.

From MyFox - Orlando, Feb. 25:
MARION COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - A woman who was the former president of the Mothers Against Drunk Driving chapter in Gainesville has been arrested for drunk driving.

Debra Oberlin, 48, was arrested around 1:00 a.m. February 18 after police say the car she was driving was swerving on Northwest 39th Street. According to the arrest report she was given two breathalyzer tests and measured .234 and .239. The limit in Florida is .08.
Journalist-turned-blogger Jonathan Turly calls her mugshot "awkward," and notes dryly, that her local MADD chapter "was closed due to lack of funds." Did that drive her to drink?

Rand Paul on Letterman: Keep the public sector small, grow the private sector

From Eric Dondero:

Rand Paul on David Letterman, Thursday night. Senator Paul schools Letterman on free market economics. They discuss taxes, Wisconsin public workers union controversy, and education funding.

Letterman finally relents:
You know I think he's wrong about some of these things. I just can't tell you why.

Missouri Bill would legalize Teens helping Parents on the Farm

Leftists Go Bezerk

by Eric Dondero

You've heard the stories. A hard-working farming or ranching family has the boys waking up at 5:00 in the morning to feed the cows, and the girls to help Mom out in the kitchen to prepare daily meals for the ranch-hands.

Well, to liberals that's simply an outdated notion.

OSHA or some other alphabet soup government agency steps in and fines the family heavily, under so-called "Child Labor Laws." In an increasing amount of cases the family farm or ranch is forced to declare bankruptcy, putting several workers on the un-employment lines.

Conservatives, libertarians: Teach Teens a Work Ethic

Now comes a courageous MO State Senator who is standing up to liberal Nanny-Staters.

From the Riverfront Times, Feb. 15:
Jane Cunningham (R - West County) believes Missouri kids need to improve their work ethic so she's sponsoring a bill (SB 222) that would repeal much of the state's child labor laws.

According to the bill's official summary, children under the age of 14 would no longer be barred from employment. They'd also be able to work all hours of the day, no longer need a work permit from their school and be able to work at motels and resorts... Moreover, businesses that employ children would no longer be subject to inspections from the Division of Labor Standards.
From the Bill:
SB 222 – This act modifies the child labor laws. It eliminates the prohibition on employment of children under age fourteen. Restrictions on the number of hours and restrictions on when a child may work during the day are also removed. It also repeals the requirement that a child ages fourteen or fifteen obtain a work certificate or work permit in order to be employed. Children under sixteen will also be allowed to work in any capacity in a motel, resort or hotel where sleeping accommodations are furnished. It also removes the authority of the director of the Division of Labor Standards to inspect employers who employ children and to require them to keep certain records for children they employ. It also repeals the presumption that the presence of a child in a workplace is evidence of employment.
Better to "Stay in School" say the Busy Body pro-government Nannys

The Senator was quoted at StaffingTalk.com:
[Rep. Cunningham said] her two adult sons both held jobs as minors and are “better for it.”

“My aim is to put back some common sense,” she said. “We’re not doing students any favor by telling them, ‘You cannot work.’ ”
Naturally, the liberals are on the attack. Their argument, not surprisingly, is that 14-year olds are better served being in public indoctrination camps, otherwise known as public education.

Blogger David Gee:
traditional bastions of child labor such as glass factories and textile mills aren’t exactly growth industries today, and there is less demand for newsboys, messengers, bootblacks and peddlers. But surely there is somewhere in this job-starved land, or at least Missouri, where we can pull kids from the classroom and teach them instead about the miseries of low paying working life.
And of course, after high school, there's the ultimate public indoctrination camp, otherwise known as public universities and colleges. And a high unemployment rate keeps those "kiddies" in liberal classrooms til the ripe old age of 22, or 23.

MISSOURI: Right to Work would spur Job Creation says one Republican legislator

Release...

Senate Comm. Hears Bill on Employees' Liberty - Measure Would Make Missouri "Right to Work"

Missouri State Senator Jane Cunningham (R-Chesterfield)

JEFFERSON CITY – Fifty percent of manufacturers refuse to consider Missouri as a place to locate new jobs because Missouri law has no protection against forced unionization of their workers, according to testimony given Tuesday in the Senate General Laws Committee. Senate Bill 1, sponsored by Sen. Luann Ridgeway, R-Smithville, would change that by giving employees the freedom to choose whether or not to join a union as a condition of getting or keeping a job.

Ridgeway said recent census data shows that businesses with jobs and the workers who take them are fleeing to states with worker protection laws, also know as “Right to Work.”

“With an unemployment rate at nearly ten percent, Missouri must consider every obstacle to putting our citizens back to work,” Ridgeway said. “It is clear that job producers and the workers who take those jobs are voting with their feet on the ‘Right to Work’ issue because they are moving to states that have this protection.”

As recently reported, Missouri will lose a Congressional seat. Ridgeway testified that non-“Right to Work” states lost a total of nine Congressional seats and, due to population shifts, “Right to Work” states gained 11 Congressional seats.

“At this important time, losing jobs, our manufacturing base, as well as representation in Congress... is a trend that must be reversed,” added Ridgeway.

Senate Leader Robert N. Mayer, R-Dexter, supports the measure and said making Missouri a “Right to Work” state would be another reason for businesses to expand or locate here.

“While Missouri has lost more than 100,000 jobs since June of 2008, many ‘Right to Work’ states have faired far better,” said Mayer. “Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show that unemployment is lower in the 22 states that have adopted ‘Right to Work’ laws. In the last decade, those states have added 1.5 million private sector jobs, while non-‘Right to Work’ states have lost 1.8 million jobs. That should be a wake-up call that now is the time to allow Missouri to compete.”

Six of Missouri’s eight neighboring states are “Right to Work” states and all but one has a lower unemployment rate than Missouri. Tennessee, the only “Right to Work” state with a comparable unemployment rate to Missouri, gained jobs in 2010, Missouri lost jobs.

Sen. Jane Cunningham, who chairs the committee, said much of the testimony highlighted Missouri’s need to better compete to bring more jobs to Missouri.

“It was alarming to learn from those who consult U.S. and foreign manufacturing companies on new site locations that 50 percent of those companies are not even considering Missouri because we are not a ‘Right to Work’ state,” Cunningham said. “That shows by not changing we are costing Missouri jobs.”

The committee also heard testimony that per household income was higher in “Right to Work” states than in forced union states. Data cited from a study published in 2000 by Dr. James T. Bennett, a professor for George Mason University, demonstrated that the mean two-income household in a “Right to Work” state had nearly $2,000 more in after-tax purchasing power than its counterpart in a non-“Right to Work” state. A study published in 2005 by Dr. Barry Poulson, a professor at the University of Colorado, determined real disposable income in metropolitan areas in “Right to Work” states is higher, with nearly $4,300 more in after-tax purchasing power than its counterpart in a non-“Right to Work” state.

Ridgeway noted that if Missouri becomes a “Right to Work” state, employees will still be allowed to unionize and employers will still be allowed to enter into collective bargaining agreements and hire union labor.

“‘Right to Work’ is not about whether unions can continue to operate in Missouri,” said Ridgeway. “Rather it is about removing a legal barrier that is harming our state’s ability to compete for jobs that impact the 89 percent of Missourians that are not union members.”

The committee also heard a similar bill, Senate Bill 197, also sponsored by Ridgeway that would send the measure to voters. To learn more about these bills, visit www.senate.mo.gov.

Saturdays at LR: Slight change of Format

From Eric Dondero:

As many regular LR readers have become aware of over the years, weekends are a bit less "on-format." We get a little more loose.

If you come to LR on a Monday or any weekday, you're going to find mostly straight-forward, hard-hitting news, with some occasional light-hearted stuff mixed in, for the evenings.

On Saturdays, we're going to start running an increased amount of press releases from various Republican legislators and congressman. Mostly, in full (sometimes edited down a bit). And also from libertarian-oriented organizations.

So, if you've got a favorite politician or organization that has a release of interest to libertarian Republicans, sent it along to me, or send me a note with a link.

General Stuff; We're hoofin' along at a regular 950 visitors a day, mostly over 1,000 during the week, lower 900s on the weekends.

We have one of the most steady, regular readerships in the right-blogging community. Most others bounce around from 500 one day, to 2,000 the next to 200 after that. We almost never fall below 800.

Of course, we'd much prefer to be at the regular 1,050 a day. Help us out, by recommending the site to a friend. And signing up at the top for the Daily LR Newsletter which gives you a well-formatted, quick to read summary of the day's posts.

IMPORTANT!

Finally, you may have noticed we are at 290 Google Followers (sidebar). Please! help us to boost that over 300. If you are not a Follower, please become one ASAP. It's rare for a blogspot to reach over 300. We're on the edge of accomplishing that goal. Help us please!

Republican Cong. Campbell for Legalized on-line Gambling

From Eric Dondero:

Congressman John Campbell has often been on the libertarian radar, but never highlighted as one of the top libertarian Republicans. With this new piece of legislation, his standing in the LR community may rise greatly.

From SF Gate, "Online gambling could be California revenue source"
In Washington next month, self-described "libertarian-leaning Republican" Rep. John Campbell of Newport Beach (Orange County) will join Massachusetts Democratic Rep. Barney Frank to introduce a bill that would lift federal restrictions to online gambling.

It will be similar to a measure that the Democratic-controlled House Finance Committee passed 41-22 last year with seven Republican votes.

Campbell remains optimistic, even though the House is now controlled by his fellow Republicans. He could attract Tea Party support describing it as "freedom issue" and as a matter of consumer protection.

"I don't think this is something we should be banning or making illegal," Campbell said. "Americans want to gamble online and they're doing it now in droves, but they're using offshore sites that don't provide anything for the economy of the United States and don't provide any protections for these people who are gambling."

IRELAND ELECTIONS: Fine Gael, a Free Market party, makes gains

Exit Poll: Fine Gael within reach of a majority

by Clifford F. Thies

It will be a couple more days before we know for sure, but an exit poll puts Fine Gael within reach of a majority of seats in the new Irish national assembly.

Fine Gael (a center-right party in affiliation with the Christian Democrats of Europe) came in first, with 36 percent; Labor (center-left) second, with 25 percent; and, Fianna Fail (a centrist party in affiliation with the Liberal parties of Europe) third, with 15 percent. The rest of the votes were scattered amongst the Green Party, Sinn Fein (a stridently republican and socialist party), and
independents.

In the Irish system of voting, members of the national assembly are elected from multi-member districts by the single transferable vote method. For example, in a five-member district, any candidate receiving enough first preference votes is elected, and others are elected as necessary from the transfer of votes to candidates with a chance of winning from the second or lower preference votes of
candidates who were defeated. With 36 percent of first preferences for Fine Gael and 25 percent for Labor, it is possible that Fine Gael and Labor will dominate the new assembly, with Fine Gael having a majority and Labor a large minority.

If Fine Gael does not fetch an outright majority of the seats, it may be able to reach the 50 percent mark with the support of some of the independents, most of whom have a center-right orientation, or even with Fianna Fail, reduced as it may be to small party status. In any case, the strong showing for Fine Gael means that the economic policies that transformed Ireland from a poor country into one of the
richest in the world will survive the financial crisis of 2008. Fine Gael proposes to bring the country's budget into balance through spending cuts along with some help from Germany and perhaps some other EU countries in re-financing its debt on more favorable terms.

Since independence, Ireland has mostly been governed by a coalition led either by Fianna Fail or Fine Gael. The main difference between the two, traditionally, is that Fianna Fail is a wee bit more republican (meaning, nowadays, anxious for unification of the island as an independent republic) and a wee bit more populist (or, socially-conservative).

During the 1990s, Fianna Fail came to be associated with liberalization of the Irish economy. But, that was when Fianna Fail was in coalition with the Progressive Party, a libertarian party that is now dissolved. For a time, it seemed as though Fianna Fail tilted a bit toward free-market policies and Fine Gael to socialist policies; but, that was mostly due to two tails (the Progressives and Labor, smaller coalition partners) wagging two dogs.

Oprah the Cow. No, really

PC WATCH!

From Eric Dondero:

Diana Waterman is the newly-elected Vice-Chair of the Republican Party of Maryland. And she has found herself in a big controversy.

Seems locals in Queens Anne County, on a local community blog, have discovered a huge scandal: She has a black cow named Oprah. The cow is actually a Black Angus.

From NBC Washington:
According to the Baltimore Sun, the issue came to light on a recent Facebook posting when the cow birthed a calf.

The Sun says the posting caught the attention of Sveinn Storm, who runs a Queen Anne's County-focused blog called "Pave Our County?"

Storm criticized Waterman's naming the cow after the African-American talk show host who has struggled with her weight. Storm say that's "precisely why an enormouse number of Americans view Republicans as racists."

Waterman defends the name. In a response to the Sun she said her children named the family's three cows. Oprah was named for a person they admire. The other two, Ferdinand and Isabella are named after the Spanish monarchs who approved Christopher Columbus's trip to the New World.
The State GOP is not rolling over for the PC mavens. A spokesman for the Maryland Republican Party commented:
"With Maryland facing a record budget deficit, historic unemployment and a government that spends beyond its means, I'm not sure why we're talking about cows," said Ryan Mahoney.

Congressman Smith on Texas Terror Plot: a "Failure of Immigration System"

Release...

Washington, Feb 24 -

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas) issued the following statement in response to the thwarted terror plot in Texas. Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari, a 20-year-old citizen of Saudi Arabia in the U.S. on a student visa, is charged with the attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and is alleged to have listed the home of former President George W. Bush as a possible target.

Chairman Smith: “The terror plot in Texas underscores that the lax enforcement of our immigration laws is a gaping hole in our security system. According to the affidavit, Aldawsari has been planning to commit a terror attack against the U.S. for years. That is precisely why he applied for a student visa, in order to gain entry to the U.S. and carry out his plot.

“We shouldn’t be surprised that terrorists continue to enter the U.S. on visas when our immigration laws are so loosely enforced. The 9-11 hijackers entered the U.S. after obtaining visas. And the Christmas Day bomber was able to board a plane en route to Detroit because he too had a visa.

“History is only repeating itself because we are letting it. We must do more to screen visa applicants to prevent terrorists from entering the U.S. in the first place.

“According to the affidavit, Aldawsari wrote in his journal that to avoid detection, he would need multiple drivers’ licenses and a forged U.S. birth certificate. The 9-11 hijackers fraudulently obtained more than 30 drivers’ licenses and identification documents. These allowed them to ultimately board commercial planes on September 11. That’s why Congress passed the REAL ID Act, which established national guidelines for the issuance identification documents to prevent terrorists from obtaining drivers’ licenses. Unfortunately, the Obama Administration continues to delay the full implementation of this law.

“In addition to stronger enforcement of immigration laws, we need the PATRIOT Act to prevent attacks from both terrorist organizations and rogue terrorists acting alone. Provisions of the PATRIOT Act are scheduled to expire in May. We cannot afford to leave our intelligence community without the resources they need to keep Americans safe.

“This was a victory for our law enforcement community, but a failure of our immigration system. We have not learned the lessons of 9-11. Until we crack down on our immigration laws that allow terrorists to enter the U.S., history will continue to repeat itself.”

MAINE: Olympia meets with libertarian Republicans

“I have found these meetings to be constructive, forthright exchanges on the key issues facing our state and nation. Obviously there are some matters on which we’ve agreed, and others where we have differences. Ultimately, the input of my constituents has always been invaluable to me in doing my job as Senator.”-- Sen. Snowe on RLC mtg.

From Eric Dondero:

It is not known if the Senator arranged for the meeting or local libertarian Republicans. But the Lewiston Sun is reporting that Maine's longtime Senior Senator Olympia Snowe held a private meeting with representatives of the Republican Liberty Caucus.

From the Lewiston Sun-Journal, "Snowe meets with Republican Liberty Caucus to defend record," Feb. 25:
The Maine chapter of the Republican Liberty Caucus on Sunday posted on its blog the details of a recent meeting with U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine.

The post says the meeting took place on “neutral ground,” at a hotel conference room in Augusta — a description that underscores the tension between Snowe, considered a moderate, and the right wing of the GOP.

The RLC is a national organization. It’s considered a libertarian group that is connected to the tea party. According to the post by Ken Lindell, chairman of Maine RLC, also invited were representatives from other conservative organizations including tea party activists, constitutional conservatives, libertarians and devotees of the John Birch Society, as well as representatives from the Maine Legislature and the Republican State Committee. The common thread, Lindell said, was that "all the participants represented factions of the Republican Party that were either critical of Senator Snowe’s moderate track record, and in some cases outright hostile to the senator."

The Maine chapter of the RLC last spring backed Gov. Paul LePage in the GOP primary.
The Senator is longtime friends with Governor LePage (who grew up in Lewiston), and also with Lewiston libertarian Republican activist and former legislator Stravos Mendros.

Ironically, Andrew Ian Dodge, Tea Party activist, an RLC member, and friend of this website, is the only declared candidate against her for the GOP nomination.
