From Eric Dondero:
Meet Martha Zoller. She is a popular "Tea Party radio talk show host" in Georgia. She's syndicated on 12 stations around the state. Now she's preparing to announce for congress, for a newly-added 12 district (redistricting).
Of particular interest to pro-national security libertarians, Zoller wrote a piece for PJ Media back in 2008 on Bob Barr's Libertarian Party presidential run, Could Bob Barr Be the Spoiler Candidate of 2008?
She complimented the former Georgia congressman for taking a non-standard Libertarian approach on border security.
It looks as if former congressman Bob Barr will seek the Libertarian Party nomination for president. If so, he could make John McCain's bid for the White house even more challenging than it already is.MarthaZoller.com
One of the big stumbling blocks for old-time Libertarians was their view on open borders. In light of the existence of the nanny state in America today as well as a less than free market impeded by regulation, Barr is taking a more forward view than the Libertarian Party now professes on illegal immigration. He believes there must be border security but doesn’t support a fence. In addition, he believes it is an issue of sovereignty. Libertarians have acknowledged that in a perfect world involving a free market and personal responsibility, an open border is not a threat because you have to make your own way. But this is not a perfect world and Barr’s position on border security may play well with many voters.
8 Bloviations:
She lives in the 9th district...with me. She'll likely win. The 12th is over by Savannah and all that crap.
My question is how much is she leaning? Until I see a statement on her site (which I do not see) advocating for the legalization of something then she may well be leaning some direction but she ain't leaning enough.
If she is Tea Party she is by definition "libertarian-leaning."
If I (or other Libertarians) have to get out a micrometer to measure how much a candidate leans libertarian then why not just call them pro-border security, pro-free market Republicans?
Shouldn't a L/libertarian candidate advocate the legalization of something?
Gee. After reading up on the proposed new district, I might not be in it.
How about this: I've heard her often on GA radio web streams. How about the "legalization" of keeping more of one's earnings? How about the "legalization" of deciding how to live one's life and provide for one's family free of regulatory meddling and criminalization?
Cut the "not leaning enough" crap, Thane. She's a Conservative like me and makes no pretense otherwise. Like me she agrees with a tremendous number of core libertarian policies and shares a deep appreciation for personal liberty and responsibility.
I just don't get the negativity. Zoller gladly works with Teapers and Libertarians on her show to push a Liberty agenda. She's a friend of Boortz, Barr and Cain. She'll do the same in Congress.
Ran
Thane, I think anyone who is willing to praise the Libertarian Presidential candidate in a whole column has got to be pretty darn libertarian herself. Read the article she wrote on Barr. It was nothing but exalting him.
And like Ran says, she's a friend of Boortz. Man, how much more do you want???
All,
I am no tea party cheerleader (neither am I someone to dig on them by default). I am critical about all candidates regardless of their party affiliation.
I think the word libertarian should mean something and not simply be a set of rhinestones applied to yet another Republican candidate's campaign jacket. I am happy to cheer for a candidate that advocates for freedom of whatever variety.
Zoller may be better than 85% of Republican candidates. My criteria of a candidate worth being excited about is being better than 95% of Republican candidates. Zoller is apparently a fine writer who offers fair analysis.
If she is as good a candidate as y'all think she is then my slight critique and lack of being on her cheer leading team won't hurt her one little bit.
