Socialists routed in state and local elections in Spain

Center-right People's Party hesitates to call for snap national election

From Cliff Thies:

As expected, the center-right People's Party swept Spain's state and local elections last Sunday, running 10 points ahead of the Socialist Party, taking all major municipalities and almost all states and autonomous regions. Instead of calling, immediately, for a snap election, the People's Party merely stated that the Socialists had lost the confidence of the people of the country. It is expected that, as the People's Party take over the places they gained from the Socialists, they will uncover the kind of hidden debt and corruption that was uncovered in Catalonia following last December's election in that place.

The Socialists only one because of terrorist bombings and a weak willed population, if you remember right. This is just a correction, not a change in heart. Further, I would guess those people will jump ship at even a blip of danger. I am surprised the socialists didn't call in another bombing, though it might have been worse with them in power. Next time.

Well, that and Spaniards hate the austerity measures forced on the Socialists by the EU. Regardless, no matter how they vote, that will not change.

It was only two weeks ago that I was posting this story with you all.

B/t/w Eric: the Spanish conservatives---are they REALLY called the Peoples party? That seems so leftist sounding & you are the cunning linguist herein.
