Ryan's budget plan has "libertarian" elements

Privatize Medicare, turn Medicaid over to the states, eliminate Head Start, Pell grants

Winfield Daily (Kansas) Courrier editorializes on "Rep. Paul Ryan's budget" April 10 (excerpt):
Ryan has taken considerable political risk.

His 10-year budget proposal goes to the heart of our nation’s fiscal futility: health-care costs.

Ryan would privatize Medicare and turn Medicaid, the health insurance program for the poor and disabled, over to the states.

These are frightening ideas for seniors and those who live supported by the government safety net, but it is important to remember these ideas are only opening salvos.

Yes, there are many conservative, even libertarian notions in Ryan’s budget.

He would repeal President Obama’s health reform and make the Bush tax cuts permanent.

Neither of those notions is likely to fly, nor are the House Republican majority’s notions for eliminating Head Start or Pell grants.

With luck, the ball will soon be in play to reduce deficits over the long term, and we will have a right to expect an eventual outcome that is good for all of us.
