MANLY LIBERTARIAN REBEL
From the NY Times, Review by A.O. Scott, May 14:
You may have heard that Robin Hood stole from the rich and gave to the poor, but that was just liberal media propaganda. This Robin is no socialist bandit practicing freelance wealth redistribution, but rather a manly libertarian rebel striking out against high taxes and a big government scheme to trample the ancient liberties of property owners and provincial nobles. Don’t tread on him! From the Editor: I went to see the film this evening. It was indeed libertarian-themed in parts. The issue of taxes, was front and center throughout the entire movie. Taxes without representation was portrayed quite negatively. Two political scenes in particularly stand out; a Braveheart-like moment where Crowe cries out forthrightly "Liberty," and nearing the end, the injustice displayed by King John as he tramples on the Rights of Man. Outside of the politics, it was thoroughly enjoyable from beginning to end. It was a very complex story, much more in-depth than past Robin Hoods, and in some respects a bit difficult to follow. Two or more viewings may be best to full capture the plot.
So is “Robin Hood” one big medieval tea party? Kind of...

The Robin Hood of John Cleese in "Time Bandits" is far better:
Robin Hood: The poor are going to be absolutely thrilled. Have you met them at all?
Randall: Who?
Robin Hood: The poor.
Randall: The poor?
Robin Hood: Oh you must meet them. I'm sure you'll like them. Of course they haven't got two pennies to rub together but that's because they're poor.
I have a problem with Russell Crowe being Robin Hood. However, I heard that the movie was sypathadic towards Prince John and sites Robin as being a bad guy. Maid Marrion? They had her as a female warrior. I perfer the Disney's Fox Robin Hood and 1991's version with Uma Thurman as Maid Marrion.

I loved it. In my opinion, having a more real Robin Hood, less fairy man and more libertarian human, is just better. I think that when Hollywood FINALLY puts out a libertarian, anti-big government movie we should as a community really applaud it and give them some positive reinforcement for giving us something un-liberal for once. I will probably go see it in the theater at least one more time- it's worth the money, even if it doesn't portray him in the usual way, but the usual way also makes him look like a socialist, so I'll take the manly, tea party Russel Crowe version any day.
And Marian is no feminist in this movie either- just a hard-working female with her guard up because of a hard life in a hard period of history.
