North Dakota Democrat Lawmaker: Seat Belt Law penalties should be even tougher, first stop offense, higher fines

SAFETY NAZI UPDATE!

LR Blog reported two weeks ago, on a an attempt by South Dakota Democrat lawmakers to mandate Seat Belt law use for adults in the State. The legislators were planning to cash in on more federal dollars made available from the incoming Obama administration. Now SD's neighbors to the North are also going down the Safety Nazi road. And once again, the effort's being led by Democrats.

From Just Say Anything Blog:

North Dakota has required motorists to use their seat belts for years, but a Fargo legislator and representatives of several state agencies say usage isn’t likely to rise unless the law is toughened.

“There’s just a certain segment of society ... I don’t think we’re going to make any more progress,” said Rep. Ed Gruchalla, D-Fargo, who is a former state highway patrolman. “This will give us a dramatic increase.”

Gruchalla is sponsoring a bill that would allow North Dakota law officers to stop and ticket motorists if they are observed not using their seat belts. The House Transportation Committee held a hearing on the proposal Friday.
Say Anything Blog out of ND, goes on to cite statistics showing how road fatalities in the State actually went up after seat belt laws were enacted.

Note - "Safety Nazi" is a term first coined by PJ O'Rourke in his 1988 book "Republican Party Reptile." It's meant to describe those who want a risk free society: seat belt laws, lower speed limits and smoking/drinking bans.

New Sarah Palin numbers: Republicans absolutely adore her, Democrats despise her, Independents moving her way

Move the Party more in the direction of Sarah Palin is the clear view of Republican voters according to a just-released nationwide poll.

Released from Rasmussen, Jan. 29 (h/t GOP 12):

Coming off a shellacking at the polls in November, the plurality of GOP voters (43%) say their party has been too moderate over the past eight years, and 55% think it should become more like Alaska Governor Sarah Palin in the future, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.

For Palin, her favorables are 52% (28% Very Favorable) and her unfavorables are 46%, with 26% who see her in a Very Unfavorable light.

Again, the party differences are enormous, although Democrats clearly like McCain more than Palin while for GOP voters the opposite is true.

Thirty-one percent (31%) of Republican voters have a Very Favorable view of McCain, compared to five percent (5%) of Democrats. Nineteen percent (19%) of Democratic voters have a Very Unfavorable opinion of the Arizona senator, but only six percent (6%) of Republicans agree.

Fifty-one percent (51%) of Republicans have a Very Favorable regard for Palin, while an identical number of Democrats (51%) hold a Very Unfavorable view.

Palin fares better with unaffiliated voters, too. For McCain, unaffiliateds break 10% Very Favorable and eight percent (8%) Very Unfavorable. But 35% of unaffiliated voters have a Very Favorable opinion of Palin, compared to 15% who have a Very Unfavorable view.

Michael Steele loves Puppies

Blast from the Past

Rewind to the 2006 Senatorial campaign in Maryland. This Michael Steele for US Senate ad - known as the "Puppie ad" - was a hit throughout Maryland, and caught on nationwide on YouTube. If you've never seen it, it's an absolute must view. Perhaps one of the greatest political ads ever run by any candidate of either major party.

Steele ended up losing that campaign 55 to 45% to Democrat Ben Cardin. One of the reasons for his loss, was ultra-liberal media bias by the States' two leading newspapers, who relentless attacked him. They even referred to him as an "Uncle Tom."

Fast forward to 2009:

One of the newspapers that was so highly critical of Steele - the Baltimore Examiner - just went out of business. And Michael Steele?

He just got elected National Chairman of the Republican Party.

Oh, and just for the record, Republicans love Puppies. -- ED

Philly Inquirer seeking $10 million Government bail-out: "Fast" Eddie Rendell to the Rescue

by Eric Dondero

And so it continues...

We learn this morning that yet another major liberal newspaper may be on the rocks. This time the mighty Philadelphia Inquirer.

Yesterday, it was reported that the Baltimore Examiner is officially going out of business on Feb. 15. The ultra-left Seattle Post-Intelligencer is very likely to close its doors in early March. And the liberal activist Minneapolis Star-Tribune has just filed for bankruptcy. The Detroit Free Press, openly hostile to Michigan libertarians and conservatives, has cut back circulation and the number of editions printed a week. Heavy rumors of the coming demise of the elite liberal Boston Globe are in the air. Even the LA Times announced yesterday, that they will be laying off 300 employees, and will "consolidate sections."

Pennsylvanians being asked to "Poney up"

Now Philly's number one liberal rag has been added to the list. But there's a twist to this Philly Folly. Governor Eddie Rendell is riding in on his white horse to save the day.

Stephen Gutowski at Newsbusters reports:

According to an interview between the Philadelphia Bulletin and Pennsylvania Governor Democrat Ed Rendell's press secretary [Chuck Ardo], there is little doubt that the Philadelphia Inquirer is indeed requesting a $10 million bailout. The request comes at a time of great financial trouble for the owner of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Media Holdings. The company has been missing its debt payments since June and is in "technical default" according to the Bulletin.

The fact that Chuck Ardo confirmed that the governor could grant the bailout without consent from the legislature leaves little chance that the Inquirer won't get the $10 million it wants, especially considering the Democrat governor was quick to bailout retail chain Boscovs.
Will the taxpayers oblige?

A prominent leftwing Libertarian Thomas Knapp, recently commented on the trend of liberal newspapers going under on this Blog:

"It's hard to tell whether the trend of newspapers hitting the financial wall is a "liberal" versus "conservative" thing."
Even if that were the case, it's awfully hard to make a libertarian case for government bailouts of newspapers. Not a single one of the Nation's centrist or conservative leaning newspapers (Washington Times, Manchester Union-Leader, Dallas Morning News, Orlando Sentinnel, San Diego Trib.), is asking for such a bailout, as is the Philly paper and others up in the northeast, most notably three papers in Connecticut.

These liberal papers have brutally assaulted conservatives for decades. They mercilessly attacked George Bush and Republicans at all levels. Additionally, they've almost completely ignored libertarian views, and most especially Libertarian candidates. Now, they are seeking bailouts from taxpayers, in Connecticut, Pennsylvania and no doubt soon in other states. This will, no doubt, include dollars from taxpayers who hold rightwing views in opposition to the liberals?

Will conservative and libertarian taxpayers allow their tax dollars to go fund their advesaries and enemies in the liberal press?

Former Commander of the USS Cole blasts Obama administration decision to close down Gitmo

Obama making policy based on liberal legal advocay groups

In late 2000, the USS Cole was attacked in the Port of Yemen, by Muslim extremists connected with Al Qaeda. 17 US Sailors were killed. Democrat President Bill Clinton ordered no retaliatory strikes. The incident was viewed by the Clinton administration, as largely a legal and diplomatic matter.

Now, the former Commander of the Cole Kirk Lippold is seriously calling into question the Obama administrations decision to close down Gitmo, and transfer detainees to prisons on the US mainland. He blasted the Obama administration for making policy decisions based solely on protests from liberal "legal advocacy groups" and ignoring the wishes of the families of the dead US Sailors.

From the Miami Herald, Jan. 30:

"I don't think we should close Guantanamo Bay until we have some process in place, until we understand the impact of closing it, until there is a much more robust review by the international community on how to deal with these detainees," he said. "To bring them to the U.S. and give them the same constitutional rights that we as American citizens have earned is an affront to the decency of these families and should absolutely not be allowed."
Lippold went on to say:

"We should consider what is best for the American people, which is not to jeopardize those who are fighting the war on terror — or even more adversely impact the families who have already suffered loses as a result of the war."
Note - One of the Gitmo detainess is the man responsible for the Cole attack, Saudi Arabian Abd el Rahim al Nashiri.

Iraq: Before George Bush, After George Bush

One of the most brutal totalitarian dictatorships in modern history defeated by the United States of America

Saddam Hussein is reponsible for the deaths of an estimated 1.5 million people, by some accounts as many as 2 million. Many were brutally tortured in his prisons. Some 200,000 Iraqi Kurds were gassed by Saddam's Weapons of Mass Destruction. Another 60,000 Kuwaitis were tortured, raped and killed during the year-long occupation by Saddam's forces. An estimated 500,000 southern Iraqis, mostly Shi'ite were gunned down, and hung in the streets after the first Persian Gulf War.

Now today, as the BBC reports, Post-Saddam, the Iraqis are holding peaceful elections nationwide.

Iraqis are electing new provincial councils in the first nationwide vote in four years, with the Sunni minority expected to turn out in strength. After a slow start, correspondents said voting was brisk, including among Sunni Muslims, who largely boycotted the last elections.
5 years after the US Liberation of 35 million Iraqis

Ed Morrisey, HotAir.com Editor, in "Iraqis go to the polls," comments:

"a festive mood has broken out in Iraq... This is what victory looks like."
All thanks to former United States President George W. Bush.

Libertarians cheer new Republican Chairman Michael Steele

From Eric Dondero:

On the 6th ballot late this afternoon, Michael Steele won the Chairmanship of the Republican National Committee.

Libertarian Republicans had hoped for a Steele win from the get go. This Blog highlighted his run, the very day he announced. (Though, we would have also been happy with conservative stalwart Ken Blackwell, and content with friend of Michigan libertarians Saul Anuzis).

Steele served as Lt. Governor under Governor Bob Erlich in the early 2000s. Erlich was a hardcore budget hawk and fiscal conservative, but was also well known as a socially moderate GOPer, even backing marijuana decriminalization.

Steele, though a strong conservative, has tended to the libertarian side of conservatism. And for that we our greatly encouraged to have a fellow traveler running our Party.

Congratulations Michael Steele. The libertarian wing of the GOP stands ready to back you firmly and enthusiastically in your efforts to build our Party in the coming years!

UPDATE!

Politico.com is reporting that longtime California libertarian Republican Shawn Steel, (no relation), supported Michael Steele. Shawn Steel, former California GOP Chairman, was a member of the Republican Liberty Caucus in the 1990s, and is also a close friend and ally of libertarian Republican Congressman Dana Rohrabacher. From Politico:

California Committeeman Shawn Steel, a vocal backer of the new chairman, called it “the most thoroughgoing change since Ronald Reagan took over the Party.”

Major Liberal Newspaper in Washington DC corridor to close down

BREAKING NEWS!!!

Baltimore Examiner to shut down Feb. 15

Rumors of domino-like closings of liberal newspapers around the country, appear to be true. The first to go: The Baltimore Examiner, sister publication of the San Francisco Examiner.

From the Baltimore Sun, Jan. 29:

MEMO

From Ryan McKibben, CEO, Clarity Media Group:

Earlier today I met with many of our employees in Baltimore to explain that Clarity Media Group had reached the unfortunate conclusion that it must close the Baltimore Examiner. This very difficult decision comes after several months of very active, but unsuccessful efforts to find a buyer for the newspaper. I am writing you because I want to personally let know why we are forced to take this action.
The Death Watch now focuses on three other leading dailys: The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Boston Globe and the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, all very activist Leftist papers in their respective communties, who have been merciless in their criticisms of both conservatives and libertarians over the years. Note, the Seattle P-I is also "looking for a buyer."

Libertarian Party calls for a rejection of Obama AG pick Eric Holder

For Immediate Release

Libertarian Party urges 'no' vote on Holder
Attorney General nominee hostile to Second Amendment rights

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- America’s third-largest political party urged the Senate Wednesday to reject the nomination of Eric Holder to be Attorney General, citing his record of hostility to Second Amendment rights.

“The Attorney General is expected to defend our Constitutional rights, not infringe them,” said Libertarian Party spokesman Donny Ferguson, “Americans value the precious rights protected by the Second Amendment, and they demand the Senate reject this nomination.”

Nominated by President Barack Obama to lead the Justice Department, Holder earned the ire of gun rights groups while Deputy Attorney General under then-President Bill Clinton, from 1997 to 2000.

Holder supported mandatory licensing and registration of gun owners, banning certain types of legal ammunition, waiting periods for handgun purchases, restricting law-abiding gun owners to purchase only one gun a month and regulations intended to drive gun shows out of existence.

Holder was also a key figure in a 2000 attempt by the Clinton administration to sue several firearms manufacturers who did not agree to restrict certain lawful sales, despite the fact Congress earlier rejected such proposed rules.

The companies were told the government lawsuits would be dropped if they agreed to restrict certain sales to lawful purchasers and stop manufacturing certain types of legal firearms. Only one, Smith & Wesson, agreed.

Holder also sided against gun rights in the Supreme Court’s 2008 District of Columbia v. Heller case seeking to overturn Washington, D.C.’s gun control laws. In a brief, Holder argued the Second Amendment confers collective rights on the government and does not protect individual rights of Americans. The Court ruled otherwise, declaring gun ownership to be an individual right.

For more information on this issue, or to arrange an interview with the Libertarian Party, please call Director of Communications Donny Ferguson at (202) 333-0008, x. 225 or e-mail Donny.Ferguson@lp.org.

The Libertarian Party is America's third-largest political party, founded in 1971 as an alternative to the two main political parties. You can find more information on the Libertarian Party by visiting www.LP.org. The Libertarian Party proudly stands for smaller government, lower taxes and more freedom.

Prisoners in one State get LCDs in time for the Super Bowl at Taxpayer's expense

Will Khalid Sheikh Muhammed and the 200 other Muslim Terrorists receive similar privleges after Obama shuts down Gitmo?

by Eric Dondero

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick has asked his close friend Barack Obama for a bail-out for the State. According to WND: "Massachusetts is currently struggling with a $2.5 billion shortfall in its budget and is anticipating a $4 billion shortage for next year."

World Net Daily is reporting this morning:

While state employees face layoffs, one state is spending thousands of dollars to ensure prison inmates can watch the Super Bowl from 117 brand new high-definition, flat-screen televisions.

Massachusetts' overcrowded prison system has already shelled out $76,958 for the new sets this month, the Boston Herald reports.

Department of Corrections spokeswoman Diane Wiffin said the TVs will be placed in all common areas of all Department of Correction prisons before the nation's transition to digital TV.
The article continues:

According to the report, the DOC bought two different kinds of flat-screen TVs: 32-inch LG brand plasmas and a 26-inch Sharp LCDs.

The average cost for each television was approximately $649.
The Obama administration is pledging to shut down Gitmo "within a year," and transfer Muslim terrorists to the prison system in the mainland US. A number of different sites are currently being considered including at least one, up in the Northeast.

Could these same Terrorists one day be watching a Giants vs. 49ers game, the hit TV series '24' or even CineMax softcore pornography courtesy of the US Taxpayer? Maybe a History Channel special on Bin Laden and 9/11? Or even, Obama's preferred network, Al-Arabiya television news?

Che the Communist Mass Murderer is glorified by Hollywood

by Andrew Murphy

What's next? A romantic drama about the life and times of Pol Pot?

Hollywood leftist Benicio del Toro can't handle the heat when confronted by the real Che Guevara. Reporter Sonny Bunch of the Washington Times had the nerve to ask del Toro about some of the less flattering aspects of Che's life, like his love of hatred and the mass executions after Castro came to power in 1959. Instead of defending the undefendable, del Toro simply walked out of the interview saying, "I'm done. I'm done, I hope you write whatever you want. I don't give a damn."

Del Toro of course is the star of the new movie, "Che" by Steven Soderbergh. The movie has been a huge hit at Cannes and no doubt will be a cult classic among the Hollywood Left and their minions.

The idea that Che Guevara was in the liberation business is pure fiction. He was a Stalinist and was in fact the one who convinced Fidel Castro to start the forced labor camps in Cuba. This quote from Che is all you need to know about the man.

"Hatred as an element of struggle; unbending hatred for the enemy, which pushes a human being beyond his natural limitations, making him into an effective, violent, selective, and cold-blooded killing machine."

Blago makes out worse than Clinton on impeachment

From Cliff Thies:

Lego my Blago!

Usually, Governors are allowed to finish out their terms in the State House before beginning their terms in the Big House. But, in Illinois, the state Senate voted today 59-0 to remove Gov. Blagojevich from office. The whole thing took one Chicago minute. Just as the U.S. Senate ignored the evidence so as to vote to not remove Pres. Clinton from office, the Illinois state Senate didn't even bother with hearing any evidence to vote to remove Gov. Blagojevich. It was all politics in both cases. In the one case, a popular Federal executive and in the other, an unpopular State executive.

Libertarian Republicans and Marijuana Reform

From the Editor:

Wow. Over 1,200 unique visitors today to Libertarian Republican blog, mostly from a link at Reddit for our article, "Progressives, Marijuana Reform advocates outraged over Obama's turn on Pot Legalization."

The article has apparently hit a nerve. It has generated enough hits at Reddit to make it the Number One article on the well-visted Marijuana page.

See it here:

http://www.reddit.com/r/Marijuana/comments/7tcis/progressives_marijuana_reform_advocates_outraged/

Additionally, Kevin Zeese former National Chairman and Co-Founder of the National Organization for Reform of Marijuana Laws, wrote me a personal note by email about the article. He was polite, but did not agree with the premise of the piece. His view: Republicans and Democrats are equally bad on the issue of Marijuana Reform.

Additionally, Paul Armentano, National Director of NORML left a comment here at LR, chiding me with: "Eric, Please get down off your high horse." Armentano pleads his case that he's been "plenty critical of Obama."

I'll have to agree to disagree with both gentleman.

Ballot Access for third parties in Oklahoma: Call your Representatives

by Michael Jose

Oklahoma currently has the most restrictive ballot access for independent and third-party Presidential candidates of any state, requiring more than 40,000 votes to qualify a party or an independent candidate for the ballot, and not allowing any write-ins. It has not had a choice other than the Democratic or Republican candidates in both 2004 and 2008.

Currently there have been bills introduced into both the Senate (SB359, Randy Brogdon) and the House (HB1702, Charles Key) [both Republicans] amending the relevant section of the law (Title 26) so that the requirements for qualifying a party would be reduced to 5,000 (thanks to Richard Winger and Ballot Access News for reporting the story ). The next step is for the bill to be heard by the appropriate committees (the House Rules Committee and presumably the Senate Rules Committee), after which each house will need to vote on the bill.

If you live in Oklahoma, please contact your legislators and tell your Senator to support SB359 and your Representative to support HB1702. You can track the progress of the bills here and learn more about Oklahoma ballot access issues here. The persons currently working on this issue the hardest are Richard Prawdzienski of the Libertarian Party and Thom Holmes of the Constitution Party. If you feel you can help this effort, you can contact Mr. Prawdzienski at prawdz@aol.com and Mr. Holmes at holmesta@hotmail.com.

Fire at Sarah Palin's Church: New details emerge... Possible Terrorist Act by outside Leftwing extremists

BREAKING NEWS!!!

Investigative Blogger Tom Collins of the Collins Report has conducted an exclusive interview with a senior Church Deacon at Wasilla Bible Church, Sarah Palin's hometown house of worship.

WBC Elder Tom Ryan offers new never-before-revealed details on the fire that occured last month.

From the Collins Report, Jan. 28 (H/t WND):

FACT: The crime was a six count attempted Murder 1, not a simple arson of a coincidently occupied building. There were 5 adult women and a 17 year old girl in the church during the arson.

FACT: The phone wires and those controlling both the fire alarm and water sprinkler systems were cut by the arsonist(s). This was not reported.

FACT: The wires were cut from the inside of the building as clearly indicated by footprints found inside the control room. Clearly the arson(s) knew the victims were present.
Collins surmises from the facts presented by the Church leader:

Clearly this was an attack caused by Governor Palin’s connection to this little Christian church.

While Alaska is our largest state in land area, it is a small town in everyday life. If a local Alaskan arson/murderer had perpetrated this crime the authorities would have made an arrest already. If a Wasillian had done this everyone would have point to the likely suspect on day one.

That leaves an outsider. That means an arsonist who came to Wasilla to kill people in a church no one ever heard of a few months ago. Why would a trained professional arsonist pick a church at random and torch it knowing there were people inside?
Two possible motives have emerged as Collins notes: 1. Sarah Palin's Republican campaign for Vice-President; 2. just a couple weeks before the fire the Church had sponsored a retreat for ex-Gays, this around the same time as Prop. 8 violence was raging on the West Coast out of California.

The FBI, BATF and Alaska State Police are investigating the fire, but have released few details to date.

Alabama NeoNazi "Terrorist" was a coke head, lived with parents... possible ties to International Anti-Jew groups

Last Thursday, Mobile, Alabama police arrested a NeoNazi suspected of acts of violence against a local Messianic Jewish synagogue, and vandalism at a local park. During further investigations they discovered bomb making materials at his home.

From NBC TV News, Mobile:

Mobile, AL - Mobile police sources tell NBC 15 News they've arrested a man believed to be a domestic terrorist. The investigation began January 5, when a local synagogue was spray painted with Nazi markings. Mobile Police are not making an official comment yet, but sources within the department say they got a very dangerous man off the streets, just in time.

Police sources tell us they when investigators arrested their man, they found bombs inside his home, and during questioning...
Now, further details are emerging. The suspect has been named. He's 22-year old Thomas Hayward Lewis. According to the Mobile Press Register: "He lives with his parents on South Jefferson Street near downtown, police said."

Continuing from the Press Register:

Members of the Congregation Tree of Life found their west Mobile building defaced with spray-painted swastikas and racist slogans, such as "Hitler was right" and "Juden raus," which is German for "Jews get out."

The names Waffen SS and Combat 18, a neo-Nazi group, were also painted on the building, according to police photos... Laborers with the Mobile Public Works Department found racist graffiti in Cooper Riverside Park the same day as the Tree of Life vandalism.

Police also found a white powdery substance believed to be either methamphetamine or cocaine, according to an assistant district attorney working the case.
The two groups mentioned, Waffen SS and Combat 18, are known to have international ties to Anti-Semitic groups in Europe. In Germany, they are part of a coalition supporting the leftwing National Democratic Party (NDP).

According to the Jerusalem Post, Jan. 21:

Hatred of Jews and Israel has over the years, particularly since the Second Lebanon War in 2006, unified diverse political groups in Germany, ranging from members of the German Left Party to pro-Hizbullah and pro-Hamas Islamists, to the NPD. Members of the Left Party, which is the fourth largest party in the Bundestag, with 54 deputies, marched in anti-Israeli demonstrations over the last three weeks in which protesters called for the destruction of Israel and the murder of Jews and Israelis.
The NDP held a vigil on January 27 in downtown Berlin against the Israeli incursion into Gaza.

Continuing from the Post:

"Joint hatred of everything Jewish is unifying neo-Nazis and Islamists... German-Palestinians protestors unashamedly admitted that they would vote for the NPD during the next election," Charlotte Knobloch, the head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, warned in her speech at a pro-Israel rally earlier this month in Munich.

Knobloch noted that the alliance between Nazis and the Palestinians was not new and that in 1941 Adolf Hitler met the grand mufti of Jerusalem, Hajj Muhammad Amin al-Husseini, to secure his support for the Holocaust.
Note - some of the fiercest units of the SS during WWII came from Muslim areas of the former Yugolsavia and Albania. More info at Atlas Shrugs, "Real NeoNazis hate Jews and Love Islam," Jan. 21.

No word yet on whether Haywood's activities were directly connected to the NDP or the protests in Berlin.

Editor's Note - LR will continue to follow this story with further updates. Also, photos used in this article are general depictions of NeoNazis, not of the suspect in Alabama nor the NDP protest in Berlin.

Progressives, Marijuana Reform advocates outraged over Obama's turn on Pot Legalization

by Eric Dondero

This is just too funny for words. The Cultural Left has gotten smacked down in the first few days of the Obama administration by one of "their own." And now they're standing around with their hands up in the air asking themselvs and others, "why... just why... did he do this?"

A few days into the new Administration, Obama's DEA raided Medicinal Marijuana facilities throughout southern California and arrested 4 individuals on federal charges of intent to distribute. These facilities are completely legal under California law, and have the full protection of the State, including support of Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

From a libertarian perspective this is a double-whammy: Through this action, Obama has signaled that his administration would not be a friend of legalization, even for medicinal use, but worse, that he has little if any respect for the concept of States' Rights. It calls into question, what will his DEA be doing in the other 10 states in the Nation that have also decriminalized medicinal marijuana, most recently in the 2008 election, Michigan and Massachusetts, by overwhelming majorities.

Obama: The ultimate Authoritarian Democrat

We libertarians, especially libertarian Republicans, have been screaming at the cultural left for months now that Obama was no friend of civil liberties. Outside of abortion rights, and gay rights, Obama is a cultural authoritarian, most especially on issues such as seat belt laws, 55 mph speed limit, gambling, free speech rights, affirmative action quotas, gun ownership and smoking bans. Why should any civil liberties advocate expect anything different from him on marijuana reform?

But support him they did. Some of the loudest supporters for Obama, and some of the loudest critics of the Republican ticket were on the cultural Left, specifically within the Marijuana Reform movement; like Rolling Stones Mag., Bill Mahr, Marc Scott Emery, and Ron Chusid. This despite the fact, that Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin was moderately supportive of marijuana reform in Alaska for years. She chummied up to the Alaska Libertarian Party, known in the State for being the Number One advocate for legalization. She even caught hell for that stance from Alaska social conservatives in her '06 primary run. And the Governor admitted herself to being a past marijuana smoker.

Now we have befuddlement and even hints of betrayal coming from the Marijuana Reform movement.

As a side note, the following editorial (excerpt) breaks new news. NORML reports that it was not only California that had raids by Obama's DEA, but Colorado, as well.

NORML hurt and confused by Obama's Marijuana stance

From Paul Armentano, Director National Organization for Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), AlterNet, Jan. 28:

Marijuana Reform Is Part of the Progressive Agenda, So Why Are Obama's Drug Cops Already Making Pot Raids?

Pot-reform activists have swarmed Obama's Change.gov, and huge majorities voted for pot reform in election '08, but no change yet from Obama.

In response to the Change.gov poll, the administration posted a curt, one-sentence response, "President Obama is not in favor of the legalization of marijuana"... [Note also] as a candidate for president, Obama renounced his support for decriminalization...

Less expected, however, were the actions of the Justice Department last week when U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration officials raided the office of a California medical marijuana provider, as well as two medical grow houses in Colorado. (The possession of marijuana for medical purposes is legal in both states, and nonprofit organizations may legally dispense marijuana to authorized patients under California law.)

The busts outraged many drug-law-reform advocates... Many news outlets also were quick to voice criticism toward the new administration for continuing with the federal raids, noting that these aggressive actions possess little to no public support.

Rather than ignore the public's calls for drug-policy reform, the new administration ought to be embracing it. After all, many of the same voters that put Barack Obama in the White House also voted by wide margins in November to liberalize marijuana laws in two states -- Michigan and Massachusetts -- and in nearly a dozen municipalities nationwide.
Republicans better friends for Marijuana Reform advocates than Nanny-State Dems

It's going to be tough medicine to take for Marijuana Reform advocates in the next few months and years, for them to realize that Democrats, most especially authoritarian Democrat Obama, is no friend to the Marijuana Reform Movement. Rather, Republicans are much more open to their stance, particularly from the States Rights' angle, than big government Nanny-Stater Dems. Recall that it's Democrats who want to nationalize Health Care and will see marijuna legalization as running counter to their cost cutting efforts to regulate healthier lifestyles for individuals. Further, their prohibitionist efforts on tobacco smoking bans should serve as a dire warning to marijuana advocates.

And Marijuana Reform advocates cannot ignore the fact, that a number of libertarian-leaning Republicans, who are record in support of a States' Rights position on medical marijuana, were elected to Congress in 2008, like California's Tom McClintock. They've already had good friends on the GOP side of the aisle, for years now, like Congressmen Dana Rohrabacher, Pete Hoekstra, Jeff Flake and Ron Paul.

But for now, we libertarians who've recognized this from the start, can just sit back and have a chuckle at their naiivate'.

Libertarians say THANK YOU Democrats who voted against the Obama stimulus

by Eric Dondero

It goes without saying that Libertarians of all stripes are very happy with Republicans in the House, for voting unanimously, all 177 GOP House members, against the Stimulus measure this afternoon.

But it took special courage for the following 11 Democrats to join with Republicans in the vote. Libertarians send gratitude to these Brave 11, mostly Blue Dogs who bucked their own Party to vote against stimulus for huge expansion of government.

Note - Some of these names come as no surprise; Taylor, Boyd and Cooper, all three of whom are basically "Republicans" with a Democrat label. But Kanjorski of Pennsylvania, normally regarded as a standard Liberal, is a bit of a surprise.

LR Blog gets a nice write up at RedState.com for highlighting Sarah Palin as a libertarian

by Eric Dondero

Josh Painter, a Contributing Editor for the Nation's Number One explicitly Republican website - RedState.com, highlighted Libertarian Republican blog in an article today: "Sarah Palin in the eye of the Beholder."

The article analyzed Palin's ideology, and how it's viewed differently from different vantage points on the political spectrum. For example, Painter quotes Pat Buchanan as saying "Sarah Palin is no NeoConservative..." But also notes: "Gov. Palin did not govern as a theocrat. She's not a Paulist libertarian."

The article ends, thusly:

The governor was conservative enough for Human Events magazine to award her her its Conservative of the Year honors. Yet she was libertarian enough for Libertarian Repulican to name her Libertarian of the Year because:

No single individual has done more to promote limited government, individualism and free enterprise this year than Sarah Palin.
Sarah Palin is what I consider an across-the-board conservative. That doesn’t mean that she has a conservative position on every political issue. It means that on most issues, she takes a conservative stance. The governor meets or exceeds the conservative threshold on social, fiscal, federalist and security issues. Single-issue zealots will not understand, nor will those so far out in left field that they wouldn’t recognize a real conservative...

Sarah Barracuda does have a populist streak, but she’s more conservative than populist... Whether she is seen as a libertarian-leaning conservative or a populist-leaning one, such a political animal may well be just what the country will be looking for after four years of Jimmy Carter-style liberalism from Barack Obama and a Democrat congress.

Texans just ain't buying Obama's stimulus package

Independence streak of Nation's second largest State starting to show

by Eric Dondero

Texans are familiar with traveling Wagon shows, selling magic cures for every ailment known to man. They'll listen politely at first, have a laugh, and move on. Some may even shout the ole' Wagon hawker down with boos and colorful wisecracks.

Now, three leading libertarian-leaning Conservatives have given a Texas-sized "Hell No" to Obama's stimulus package, after some Republican leaders met with the President to discuss the details.

From the Houston Chronicle Jan. 28:

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs praised the “very cordial” tone of the gatherings and effused: “I think we will have Republican support for this bill.”

He obviously hadn’t talked to any Texas Republicans. The GOP’s Houston-area lawmakers emerged from their closed-door session with Obama impressed with his sincerity and his outreach attempt but uniformly unimpressed with the costly plan designed to jump-start the stalled American economy.

“Redistributing hard-earned tax dollars will do far more to expand the power of the federal government than it will to stimulate the economy,” said Rep. John Culberson, R-Houston. “This legislation is a Trojan horse that liberals are using to ultimately turn America into France, because it contains massive expansion of multiple federal programs that are utterly unrelated to stimulating the economy.”

During a generally convivial hour-long session with House Republicans, several Texans, including Dallas Rep. Jeb Hensarling, bluntly told the president why they couldn’t support his plan. Hensarling, the Number 2 Republican on the House Budget Committee, said he told Obama that the “debt we incur today will eventually be paid by my 6-year-old daughter, my 5-year-old son and (the president’s) two daughters.”

Rep. Pete Olson, R-Sugar Land, gave Obama credit for “a nice gesture” in coming to Capitol Hill but said the president’s visit did little to persuade skeptical Republicans.

“In the end, you still cannot borrow or spend your way to prosperity,” the newly elected Republican said.
Note, Olson is one of four Republicans nationally, to have beaten a Democrat incumbent for a House seat in 2008. His 22nd District includes south Houston, and NASA. Culberson represents northwest Houston and Katy. Olson's campaign, and Culberson's past campaigns both included a number of libertarian volunteers.

Stock Market tumbles in 8 days since Obama takeover

Bulls & Bears Host on Fox, Brenda Buttner noted a significant drop in Market indicators on last weekend's broadcast.

From NewsHounds:

Buttner began the actual discussion by noting that Tuesday was “the Dow's worst sell off in history for an inaugural day.” As she spoke, a banner on the screen said, “Worst inaugual week for stocks since 1981.”

Buttner later noted that Traders watched the Obama Inaugural on the Floor, and indicated that a sell-off ensued soon after.
Meanwhile WND is reporting:

The Dow has been struggling for more than two weeks to stay above 8,000 following President Obama's inauguration...

The article goes on to note that there was a 332.12 point loss in the market on Tuesday, the day Obama was inagurated, followed by another "triple-digit loss Thursday" and closed friday, "down 45.24."

Bummer, No Pot Legalization under Obama

Cultural Liberals, and even many Libertarians were hopeful that a President Obama would be more tolerant on matters of Drug Legalization than President Bush. This, despite the fact, that Bush de-emphasized the War on Drugs, and even made a famous comment early on in his administration, that he "favored a States' Rights approach," to dealing with marijuana. Obama on the other hand was deflective during the campaign on the issue.

Now comes a straight out answer, on his stance.

From NewsMax Jan. 28:

Privacy, Potheads Challenge Obama Tech Team

That approach can deliver unexpected results. Before Obama took office, visitors to the transition website were asked to submit suggestions for a "Citizen's Briefing Book" that Obama would read once he settled in to the Oval Office.

The most popular item, with 92,000 votes: "Ending marijuana prohibition." The third most popular? "Stop using federal resources to undermine states' medicinal marijuana laws."

Pro-pot people may have gotten the president's attention, but in the end that may not matter.

"President Obama does not support the legalization of marijuana," spokeswoman Psaki said.

Libertarian Economics lesson for the Evening: Making Government bigger doesn't lead to Economic Growth

MANDATORY VIEWING FOR ALL LIBERTARIAN REPUBLICAN VISITORS!

(No exceptions - and there will be a pop quiz later tonight.)

Another installment in the Dan Mitchell series. This time Mitchell, a Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute, takes on the Obama Stimulus Proposal, and offers some startling statistics. He also takes on Bush economics, and says Obama's already well on the way to topping the former President for growth in government.

Editor's Note - Dan has made this available to LR blog. And will be sending us approx. one video in the series a month.

Hey Fellow Republicans, quit Whining and get to Work!

by Dennis Sanders, Minnesota Republican Party

Goldwater-style Republicans, libertarians, people like me who tend to be more Rockefeller Republicans all whine and moan about the current state of the party and there is much to be said about how the party is no longer one of ideas.

But I keep thinking that all of this feels more like a funeral- a weeping for a dear friend that has been passed on.

And the thing is, I'm tired of funerals.

I think that instead of griping about the Republican party and blaming Karl Rove and George W. Bush, how about we do something about it? Instead of expecting the current leaders, who have brought us to this point, to change, how about rising up new leaders? Instead of bemoaning the fact that we have no new ideas, how about creating new think tanks and journals and blogs that present new ideas?

I don't like the Religious Right, but they did right in steering the party in the way they wanted it to be.

Those of us on the outside, the moderates, the libertarians and so on, have not done as much. We stand and wail about how the party has lost its way, but we do very little other than complain. For a party to change, people have to get busy and organize and fight for it.

There are a lot of groups out there that work day in and day out trying to force change in the GOP. They are small and have a hard time finding people who are passionate in changing the party for the better. Maybe instead of whining, people might want to consider joining some of these groups:

Republican Leadership Council
Republican Mainstreet Partnership
Republican Majority for Choice
Real Republican Majority
Log Cabin Republicans
Republican Liberty Caucus
These groups could use support. But that means getting your hands a bit dirty instead of simply wringing them.

NeoNazi Terrorist arrested in Mobile in a "nick of time": Targetted Messianic Jewish congregation

Developing Story...

Big City Democrat Mayor received 20,000 bathroom renovations from Contractor for special consideration

The headline in the Hartford Courant this morning:

Hartford Mayor Perez Facing Bribery Charges, Will Turn Himself In Today

Mayor Eddie Perez has been under investigation by a grand jury for the past 15 months, according to the Courant: "into possible corruption at Hartford City Hall." Seems Perez was trading preferential consideration for city contracts for personal favors.
According to the Courant:

they believe the charges are related to $20,000 in kitchen and bathroom renovations done on the Hartford mayor's home by contractor Carlos Costa.

Costa, who has done millions in work for the city, was arrested by state police Monday, said his lawyer, William Gerace. He was charged with two counts of bribery, and one count each of fabricating evidence and the conspiracy to fabricate evidence, Gerace said.

Perez was to be charged with bribery, fabricating evidence, and conspiring to fabricate evidence, Santos said.
The Mayor tried to come clean after investigators starting looking into the matter. Continuing:

He [Perez] said he paid Costa in July 2007 — after investigators had begun asking questions.
Just ten days ago, Perez announced plans to ask the Federal Government for a bail-out for the City.

From The Courant, Jan. 14:

Mayor Eddie A. Perez reiterated his plan to ask the federal government for $70 million for "shovel ready" city projects... Perez outlined a plan he announced late last year that calls for money from the federal government's stimulus plan. Perez is asking for money for various projects. Perez said he's seeking $25 million from the federal government for the largest of the proposed projects, a new public safety complex... for school construction, "greening" of city buildings and streetscapes.
Stressed the Mayor, he wanted Hartford to be a "be a real example for the country."

Obama stresses his own strong Muslim ties in Interview with Arabic News Network out of Dubai

"Humbly" kneels before Muslim World and pledges America will change

Operatives, spokesman and supporters, strenuously denied Obama's ties to Islam during the 2008 presidential campaign. Now as President, Obama is fully embracing it. In an interview with Al-Arabiya Network, a radical Anti-Jew, and Anti-American Television News service, Obama pledged that under his rule, America will change, and become more accomadating to Muslim values and culture.

From Yahoo News, late last night:

President Barack Obama presented a humble and conciliatory face of America to the Islamic world Monday in the first formal interview since he assumed office, stressing his own Muslim ties and hopes for a Palestinian state, and avoiding a belligerent tone — even when asked if America could "live with" an Iranian nuclear weapon.

The interview with the Dubai-based Al-Arabiya Network was a dramatic piece of public diplomacy aimed at capitalizing on the new American president's international popularity...

"I have Muslim members of my family. I have lived in Muslim countries," Obama said, according to a White House transcript. "My job to the Muslim world is to communicate that the Americans are not your enemy."

The Al Arabiya interview, directed squarely at Muslims around the world, revived a vision of personal, symbolic international change that was in the air when Obama - with his far-flung family members, and complicated story - launched his campaign. It was a vision, and an aspect of his story, that the candidate buried when, in 2007, was forced to combat whispering campaigns about his own faith.

But by giving his first interview to the Arabic network, Obama signaled his continuing belief in his personal power...
Note, this was the first interview as President that Obama has given to any television network. He has yet to grant an interview to ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox, or even the explicit Obama-supporting network of MSNBC.

Al-Arabiya, headquarters in Dubai, is known to show graphic footage of Westerners being held hostage, and in some cases, treated brutally, and even killed.

Obama's Marxist Stimulus package, more job cuts, more lay-offs, and much more Big Government

By JB Williams
©2009 USA

Obama: Tough on Jobs

Obama’s trillion dollar taxpayer leap into pure socialism is being sold as a “jobs” initiative that will “stimulate” economic growth by “creating” 3-4 million new jobs to replace the 2.5 million jobs lost over the last two years of Democrat controlled economic chaos. Am I the only American to notice the decidedly deep downturn in our economy after Democrats took control of congress in 2006?

The problem is, government can only create “government” jobs and even if we could replace 2.5 million lost private sector jobs with 4 million new government jobs, what will it do to an already bankrupt nation?

So far, Obama is only proving his willingness to make snap decisions despite his historic lack of experience to deal with such dangerous issues. He appears just as inept as we expected.

Note to intellectuals: Private sector jobs, which can only be created by private sector investment, expand the tax base, increase productivity and feed the public trough. Government sector jobs, which are the only jobs government can create, further increase taxpayer burden, create an additional drain on the public trough, remove investor resources from private sector investment and accelerate the collapse of the world’s greatest free market economy. Write that down so that you don’t forget it when the walls come tumbling down around you...

Obama can put people to work, but at even more expense to the public trough, which has been running red ink for more than seventy years now and is on the brink of total collapse as a result. At the rate at which Democrats are promising to print more funny money, the dollar won’t be worth a peso soon, even in a Tijuana brothel.

This is clearly the work of “intellectuals.”

House Speaker Pelosi has already signaled that Obama’s first trillion is just the beginning, not the end of the latest socialist special constituent spending spree. Where does it all end? When the well runs dry?

As former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher once said, “Socialism is a great idea, until you run out of other people’s money!” A simple reality gone missing, among intellectual types like the big -0.

Obama: Tough on Freedom and Liberty

Obama, Pelosi and Reid are in full agreement on their march into unbridled Marxism. Free stuff for their constituents, is the centerpiece of their domestic agenda and in order to deliver on those promises, some freedoms are going to have to go!

There is no free lunch! That’s what your grandparents told you and they were right. Everything costs somebody, something.

Obama and Co. believe in the Marxist idea that private resources should be taken from some Americans according to their ability to cough it up, namely those who earn and are willing to tolerate, and redistributed to others according to their politically indoctrinated sense of need. Karl Marx thought the same thing.

Marx and today’s Democrats call this “economic justice.”

Our nation’s founders believed that freedom was the most “just” economic system on earth, whereby every individual has an unalienable right to define and determine their own destiny. But today’s Democrats believe in something quite different. Apparently, so do at least 66 million voters, give or take a few dead ACORN duplicate ballots.

Democrats’ idea of “economic justice” is based upon their right to confiscate private property from those who earn it, and use those resources to buy political loyalty from a growing proletariat class, who have been systematically trained to wholeheartedly believe that they are “entitled” to the earnings of others.

Obama is firmly committed to free stuff for his constituents, but at the expense of freedom for all, including his constituents. There ain’t no free lunch! Remember? Even for Obama constituents...

Young Americans for Liberty protest proposed New York Tax on Soda

Dump the Soda into the river for No More Taxes!

You've heard of the Boston Tea Party? Well, a group of New Yorkers staged their own protest on a bridge, but not for a tax on tea. This protest was against State Democrats' proposed tax increase on non-Diet Sodas.

Barack Hussein Obama chooses Arab Muslim network for very first Interview

Harsh words for Obama's handling of Gitmo by brother of 9/11 victim

Michael Burke, is the brother of FDNY Capt. William F. Burke Jr., who was killed on Sept. 11, 2001. The recent suggestions to move prisoners responsible for the 9/11 murders out of Gitmo, including 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, has left Burke royally ticked off at the Obama administration. Yesterday the NY Daily News published a column by Burke denouncing administration plans.

From the NY Daily News, Jan, 25:

Obama and the Democrats have had a blind spot for 9/11 and have yet to show they have an ounce of understanding what happened that day.

Here is why we were attacked: Muslim extremists hate Americans and want us dead. Our policies in no way influenced the vitriol perpetuated on innocent Americans on Sept. 11, 2001.

It is asinine to believe that Guantanamo Bay, even with its scandalously biased coverage, has in any way inspired a single terrorist.

Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, who has offered unapologetic confessions for 9/11 and also brags that he was the assassin of journalist Daniel Pearl ("with this blessed right hand I beheaded the Jew") sits in an air-conditioned cell, innocent until proven guilty, receiving three square meals a day, specially prepared to satisfy his religious prescriptions, free medical and dental (already meeting Obama's specifications of health care as a constitutional right) and the free services of an army of court-appointed lawyers.

Welcome to the American way of life.

Obama could grant these men full constitutional rights in an American court. And when they are exonerated, we, the U.S. taxpayers, supply a luxury cruise ship trip back home. And they will still hate us and want us dead.

The only thing Obama has accomplished is convincing these mass murderers that we are too narcissistic, too foolish and too weak to protect and defend ourselves. Just as the terrorists believed prior to 9/11.
Countries overseas, including Afghanistan, refuse to take back the prisoners, which has left the Obama administration with few options. Among possible alternative locations being disucssed include: Kansas, Colorado, South Carolina and New Jersey.

Colorado could repeal smoking ban in effort to save Bars, Taverns and Casinos

Democrat and Republican join together to introduce repeal legislation

With the downturn in the economy there could be one positive result: Smokings ban may be repealed around the country in efforts to bring back struggling small businesses.

Colorado is leading the way.

From the Rocky Mountain News, Jan. 21:

New bill could allow smoking back in bars

Portions of Colorado's 21/2-year-old indoor-smoking ban could be in jeopardy under a bill expected to be introduced soon.

The bipartisan measure would classify bars, restaurants, racetracks and parts of casinos as cigar-tobacco bars if they have a humidor and make 5 percent of annual gross income or $50,000 in annual sales from tobacco products.

Rep. Don Marostica, who will be the prime House sponsor, said the effort is driven partly by tales from bar and casino owners about massive losses of business since the ban was enacted.

But it also largely is a matter of wanting business owners and adult patrons to be able to choose the rules under which they operate, said the Loveland Republican, who says he smokes no more than a couple of cigars a year.

"There's a lot of bars in Adams County that have gone down and under (since the smoking ban), and this just gives them a way to reclaim their business," said Thornton Democratic Rep. Ed Casso, also a sponsor. "Literally, not every bar is going to convert over to being a smoking bar, but it gives them the option if they want to do that."
Editor's Comment - It's not often that we get to say something nice about a Democrat. But gratitude should be expressed to Rep. Casso for bucking his Party and standing up for Property Rights.

Democrat-controlled Michigan hits double-digit unemployment,10.6%, but expected to go even higher

From RightMichigan.com Jan. 22:

Late yesterday we learned that Michigan's nation's-worst unemployment rate had skyrocketed a full percentage point from 9.6 to 10.6 percent. Rich Haglund at Booth Newspapers reports that the number is the highest it has been since September of 1985 as "...the state was then emerging from the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression."

Mackinac Center senior economist David Littmann said he expects unemployment to hit 12 percent by July.
Michigan has a Democrat Governor, Jennifer Granholm, and overwhelming Democrat majorities in both the State House and Senate. Both US Senators, Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow are Democrats. Nine out of Fifteen of the US House members are Democrats.

Prominent Conservative News website Editor resigns from Republican Party over GOP refusal to challenge Obama's citizenship status

Excerpt from Letter to RNC and California Republican Party, Jan. 20:

Letter Of Resignation To The RNC; I Quit!
by JR Dieckmann

A majority of American voters have... elected an unqualified, no résumé, unaccomplished, radical left, and likely illegal alien, without ever demanding personal history, educational records, health records, military records, or proof of citizenship from this man. He is an absolute zero on qualifications for POTUS.

We expect this from Democrats, but we also expect that the Republican Party would have made an issue of these shortcomings and the lack of qualifications of Barack Hussein Obama. We expected that the Republican party would have made an effort to support and defend the Constitution of the United States and to see that our laws are followed. The Republican party shares the responsibility for this abomination in their negligence and refusal to stand up and fight for our Constitution and conservative values.

You and your Democrat-Lite candidate, John McCain, did neither and allowed this illegitimate candidate to usurp the office of the president. McCain’s campaign was pitiful and failed to bring up even the most basic issues of the Obama candidacy. Issues not only of his citizenship, but his dark associations with radicals (other than Bill Ayres, which was a non starter), his empathy with Islamics, his complete lack of understanding of the Constitution, the free marketplace, American history other than black separatist history, and the principles of freedom and liberty on which our country was founded.

You have not only betrayed all Republicans who have supported you over the years, but betrayed our country and - along with the Supreme Court - have allowed this trashing of our Constitution to continue with unconstitutional spending of taxpayers’ money, and by not demanding a genuine birth certificate from Barack Hussein Obama. I wish the best for Obama, but only if he resigns from this masquerade and chooses another line of work. I can never call him president unless he can prove that he is an American citizen and was born in America.

You have lost sight of what it means to be Republican. You have allowed the socialists to take over the country without a fight.

Sincerely,

J.R. Dieckmann

Floridians absolutely adore Charlie Crist

New poll numbers out from Quinnipiac. And Floridians seem to be very approving of their fiscally conservative, property tax reforming, and recently married Republican Governor.

From Quinipiac:

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist has a sky-high 65 - 24 percent approval rating

"No one has surfaced as a likely Democratic opponent for Gov. Charlie Crist and that's not surprising given how well he is thought of by Floridians," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "It's impressive at this time of national Obamamania that Gov. Crist's favorability rating is slightly higher than that of the new President. Of course, it's still more than 21 months until the 2010 election, but Charlie Crist looks like a very strong candidate for re-election."

Idaho's libertarian Republican Governor Butch Otter, pressed on accepting Fed bailout for State, stands his ground

Responds, stick with only government services that are necessary

An interesting exchange between libertarian Republican Governor Butch Otter, and the Idaho Statesman Editorial Board. Like many other States Idaho is currently experiencing a budget crunch. Reporters pressed the Governor on whether he would ultimately seek increased federal funding to help close the defecit. His reaction, better to perform only necessary government programs, and abandon the non-necessary stuff.

From the Idaho Statesman, Jan. 11, "Q&A Gov. Otter says Idaho's budget crisis will provide a chance to examine 'the proper role of government":

Q: Who are you hearing from? Who is pressuring you to ask for this federal money?

A: There isn't anybody.

Q: You aren't getting lobbied, "put my project in?"

A: We went out to every agency and said how many shovel-ready projects (do) you have right now that we could be into within 18 months.

Q: You aren't getting private- sector general contractors, alternative-energy types, broadband providers?

A: No, I haven't. Maybe the agencies have. I haven't had anybody call me and say, "Butch, go get this money and go get that money." In fact, the only long-term discussion I've had about this is with the media. The total is $2.4 billion. Initially about $817 million of that was highways. Bingo, up and ready to go right now. A total long-term of $1.3 billion of highway infrastructure in Idaho. That includes bridges.
Otter was then asked if he actually planned to cut back on government services. His answer, only do what's necessary:

I would say that one of the things we should be doing is, especially during this budgetary crisis, the priority should be what is the proper role of government. What are we constitutionally and statutorily directed to do. Then take a look at other things we are doing, and say if we are stealing out this proper role in order to put something together that is nice, but not necessary, then the nice is going to have to go away and the necessary is going to have to be the place where we pay the attention...

I think people become conditioned to say, "Well, the government ought to be doing this." You can't turn that back easily until you instill some personal responsibility back.

Obama expands Drug War: DEA Agents raid California Medical Marijuana facility

Marijuana legalization advocates and many libertarians were hopeful of a tolerant stance on drug use by the incoming Obama administration, based mainly on Obama's own admitted past illegal drug use. "Some of my fellow libertarians hope that the Obama administration will put an end to the drug war. I hope so too," wrote Pajama Pundit Jan. 21.

But now this breaking story from Fox News, Jan. 24:

DEA Agents raid Medical Marijuana facility

Five agents from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency were joined by local and federal authorities when they served a search warrant Thursday on Patient to Patient Collective.

DEA Special Agent Gordon Taylor says agents seized between five and 10 pounds of processed marijuana and a small amount of U.S. currency from the dispensary.

Physician-approved marijuana use for medical purposes has been declared legal in California since voters passed Proposition 215 in 1996.
Meanwhile, nearly a full week into the new Obama administration, Liberal Pro-Marijuana advocates are trying to deflect the blame to Bush.

From StoptheDrugWar.org:

First Medical Marijuana Raid by DEA under Obama Administration

"Whether or not this unconscionable raid on a medical marijuana provider is the fault of federal officials from the previous administration, President Obama has an opportunity to change this harmful and outdated policy," said Caren Woodson, Director of Government Affairs for Americans for Safe Access (ASA).
Note - Obama's Attorney General nominee Eric Holder is a staunch advocate of the War on Drugs. Under Clinton, he advocated greater penalties for marijuana use, and beefed up enforcement for even small-time use.
