Hoosier State Gov. says taking money from Taxpayers violates Individual FreedomFrom the Washington Times, "Indiana's Governor offers Austerity as a Virtue," Nov. 29:
The second-term governor of Indiana hasn't traveled much outside his state since he left his post as President Bush's Office of Management and Budget director in 2003. Yet the former Reagan White House adviser talks with the libertarian- and conservative-sounding conviction that might be expected to grab the attention of even the most politician-disdaining activist in the emerging tea-party movement.
When the subject turned to taxes and spending at the recent Republican Governors Association meeting in Austin, Texas, Mr. Daniels made clear his dislike of both.
"The essence of our nation is the protection of individual liberties," he says in an interview with The Washington Times. "That means, for example, never take a dollar from a free citizen through the coercion of taxation without a very legitimate purpose.
"And then we have a solemn duty to spend that dollar as carefully as possible, because when we took it we diminished that person's freedom. Otherwise, that citizen could spend that dollar on something he or she chose. This is an obligation of everybody who serves in government."

Inherently? Try not paying taxes.
Off Topic, but in case you haven't seen this in the Amcon thread--
“As stated clearly in that post, though I don’t agree with Mercer on much regarding foreign policy, I do agree with her on the Military Draft issue.”
Where? You mentioned nothing in that post about how you differ with her in terms of foreign policy. Again, if Ilana Mercer is a Paulite but who, according to you, is not a “pacifist Leftie”, how is it that Paul is one?
****" . . . the former Reagan White House adviser talks with the libertarian- and conservative-sounding conviction"****
Blah. Blah. Blah.
Like a good New Dealer Reagan massively increased Federal spending and debt. So Daniels being a Reagan advisor is no badge of honor to any Libertarian.
Governor Daniels was quoted as saying: "because when we took it we diminished that person's freedom. Otherwise, that citizen could spend that dollar on something he or she chose. This is an obligation of everybody who serves in government."
Oh, stop that crazy talk, Governor Daniels. The next thing you know, people will be equating taxation with theft, oh, now, wait a minute.....
It might be because I’m looking for it, but I think more politicians are speaking right-libertarian lately. Not that they necessarily mean it, I think it’s actually becoming “in vogue.” Maybe this grassroots movement thing is having an effect on at least how some politicians talk. I’m learning that it’s hard enough to find a politician that talks the talk, but even rarer to find one that walks the walk. I’d assess how he governed, if I lived in Indiana, before offering support.
It's rare that a politician will admit that taxation is coercion. "coercion of taxation."
Apparently though he believe coercion is justified if the purpose is something he believes is legitimate.
So this make him an honest thief now.
Walter Williams has always said that the difference between a politician and a common thief is that the common thief doesn't sermonize after the fact telling you the theft is for your own good.
But most politicians don't even recognize it as theft, so I suppose this puts him a notch above the rest.
Whatever that means.
I'm curious how much spending legislation has he actually vetoed.
