"Too many tell us what we want to hear. They don't want to offend anyone and are more worried about being liked (and thus re-elected) than acting on principle." - Alerdman Stankivic Annapolis Ward 6 Alderman Julie Stankivic has decided against a run for reelection.
Reports HometownAnnapolis.com:
Even if you didn't know what Julie Stankivic looked like, you could probably spot her during an Annapolis City Council meeting.
She'd be the one rolling her eyes, shaking her head, or sighing quietly at what her colleagues and the mayor were about to do. When it was her turn to speak, she'd make her case passionately, but she'd still be on the losing end of a lot of 8-1 votes.
"I have a lot of people out there sad that I'm going," Stankivic said. "They're like, 'But you're the voice of reason.' "
Yes, Stankivic can be sarcastic and cutting, and she rubs a lot of people the wrong way. Some aldermen grimace at the mention of her. She knows what detractors think. And she doesn't much care.
"It's not my problem," she said forcefully as we sat in a coffee shop. "It's their problem. ... I think that honesty and integrity are a lot more important than political correctness."
She even managed to annoy city workers. On city employees who didn't like her proposed changes to their 35-hour workweek and "insane" step system that includes annual raises for the first seven years: "Of course not, because they don't want to work!"Stankivic than says she may just join the Libertarian Party.
Stankivic, 44, ran as an independent, switched to the Republican Party and is now considering switching to the Libertarian Party. ("I'm probably 80 percent Libertarian, 20 percent Republican," she said.)No indication in the article if she'll be switching before her term is up.
She thinks people have become much too dependent on government. Even if you didn't agree with that - and many in overwhelmingly Democratic Annapolis don't - we need more elected officials to say the emperor has no clothes.
