Republicans win Special Election for PA Senate crushing Dem two-to-one

BREAKING NEWS!!!

A portend for what's to come in New Jersey, Virginia and 2010?

Headline from the Allenton Morning Call: "Bob Mensch breezes to victory in state Senate's 24th District; The Montco Republican gets more than twice the votes of Democrat Anne Scheuring"

The District includes suburbs north of Philly, Bucks County and Montgomery County.

Early on Democrats with a closely divided legislature, had hoped to pick off this seat. The incumbent Republican resigned to take over the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. The District had been trending Democrat Blue in recent years.

According to BallotBox.governing.com:

All four of those counties went for President Obama last fall...
Democrat committees from Harrisburg even outspent the State GOP in the race, with Scheuring receiving $118,850 to Mensch's $93,561, though the Republican came out on top with small contributions from individuals.

Continuing from Morning Call:

Republican state Rep. Bob Mensch rode his experience in Harrisburg and a well-funded campaign to an easy victory Tuesday to become the next state senator from the 24th District.

Mensch, a two-term state representative from the 147th District in Montgomery County, defeated Anne Scheuring, a Democrat in her first term on Lansdale Council, by a more than 2-1 margin in a special election, according to unofficial results with all 123 precincts reporting.
Note - Photo is of Mensch signing the ironically named "Yes we Can" petition pledging to vote to balance the budget without raising taxes.

Very unusual..but extremely interesting. Might PA go from blue to red?

This could be the start of the "change" PA desperately needs.

This is really great news. I'm hoping to see the same when we vote for judges on November 3.

While heartening news, particularly since its Pennsylvania, I suspect much of this shift is attributable to a very motivated republican base and a lot of lazy democrats who can't be bothered to drag themselves to the polls. Time will tell. I hope its the beginning of a trend. But Rasmussen seems to indicate the Arizona's governership is going demoncratic, at least as of now. And some democrat seats will never fall to a republican or conservative (e.g. Waxman's, Pelosi's, etc....)

From Ballot Access News: "Last time this seat was up for election, in 2006, the vote had been: Republican 56.5%, Democratic 43.5%."

I don't know if we can read too much into this election. A Liberal Republican Party seat elected yet another member of the Liberal Republican Party.

And why would a "Liberal" Republican sign a pledge to not raise Taxes, while cutting spending?

You know how I know this is a momentous victory for the GOP? The Mainstream Media is completely silent on it.

Imagine what we'd be seeing if the Democrat won the seat?

Oh, of additional note: There was a Libertarian on the ballot who polled a few percentage points, takijng away votes from the Republican.

While there was no 3rd party candidate from the Left.

****"And why would a "Liberal" Republican sign a pledge to not raise Taxes."****

How about to get power? Is that a reason?

Gov. Schwarzenegger lied to us here in California about taxes. In fact he not only lied but this year he increased our taxes with the help of the Liberal Republican Party in the legislature. PLUS, the state GOP spent nearly $1,000,000 to buy TV ads urging voters to increase taxes in our special election.

I have been lied to and lied to and lied to by Republican after Republican until I can't trust anyone any more. At least the Democrats are up front about being whores.
