North Dakota Democrat Lawmaker: Seat Belt Law penalties should be even tougher, first stop offense, higher fines

SAFETY NAZI UPDATE!

LR Blog reported two weeks ago, on a an attempt by South Dakota Democrat lawmakers to mandate Seat Belt law use for adults in the State. The legislators were planning to cash in on more federal dollars made available from the incoming Obama administration. Now SD's neighbors to the North are also going down the Safety Nazi road. And once again, the effort's being led by Democrats.

From Just Say Anything Blog:

North Dakota has required motorists to use their seat belts for years, but a Fargo legislator and representatives of several state agencies say usage isn’t likely to rise unless the law is toughened.

“There’s just a certain segment of society ... I don’t think we’re going to make any more progress,” said Rep. Ed Gruchalla, D-Fargo, who is a former state highway patrolman. “This will give us a dramatic increase.”

Gruchalla is sponsoring a bill that would allow North Dakota law officers to stop and ticket motorists if they are observed not using their seat belts. The House Transportation Committee held a hearing on the proposal Friday.
Say Anything Blog out of ND, goes on to cite statistics showing how road fatalities in the State actually went up after seat belt laws were enacted.

Note - "Safety Nazi" is a term first coined by PJ O'Rourke in his 1988 book "Republican Party Reptile." It's meant to describe those who want a risk free society: seat belt laws, lower speed limits and smoking/drinking bans.

Maybe North Dakota should enact mandatory tooth brushing laws, since studies show that brushing teeth leads to better hygiene, and while we're at it, maybe a condom law can be put into effect as well, since that helps prevent the spread of STD's. I used to like wearing my seat belt before it was mandatory, I felt smart, now I feel like a mindless sheep...Fred

I like seat belt laws, personally. Even if they didn't save a single life, I'd still support them because I don't want any bodies to come flying through my car just because some jackass didn't want to wear his seat belt.

Bureaucrats go out of control the more control they have. They are control freaks. They want to raise your children for you - and treat you like you are the child they are raising.

FREEDOM. It means something. Wear your seatbelt, bint, and have everyone in your car wear them. You own the car - you make the rules. But this thing called "freedom" means the Government has to leave us alone and treat us as adults who take personal responsibility for OURSELVES.

Do you agree that you want freedom?? These bureaucrats don't know "when" to stop. They won't stop. They think laws solve everything.

They're usually messed up individuals who have no capacity to work on their own lives and characters - they lack self-control and are crazy - so they turn into bureaucratic control-freaks who wanna play God.

Grace,

The trouble is, you don't actually believe what you're saying. Inasmuch as someone's seat belt preferences don't interfere with me being able to enjoy my car, I don't care whether or not they wear one. You, on the other hand, wish to limit freedoms even when that freedom doesn't affect yours.
