Twelve hundred Troops in Baghdad re-enlist on the 4th of July: A celebration of the All-Volunteer Armed Forces
Command Sergeant Major Marvin Hill who presided over the proceedings, gave a back-handed slap to those, mostly on the Left, who call for a return to the Military Draft. Hill, an African-American, said of the 1,200 re-enlisting:
"What an awesome way to celebrate 35 years of an All-Volunteer Armed Forces."
Leftist egalitarians, most notably, Democrat Congressman Charlie Rangel of New York and Congressman John Conyers of Michigan, last year introduced legislation to bring back the Military Draft. They argue that young Black men are forced into Military Service under the All-Volunteer Armed Forces due to their lacking of economic opportunties in urban areas.
Republicans, including President Bush, and most recently Former Vietnam War Veteran and POW, Senator John McCain have vociferously opposed a return to the Draft.
