Breaking News!!
The John McCain Campaign is facing a possible scandal from a Texas Campaign Staffer
John McCain Campaign Staffer Ali Akbar from the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, is alleged to have discused using voter fraud techniques. This occured in an extended conference call within 1 month ago, with two other political operatives, one a volunteer for Ron Paul for President in Nevada. The staffer is in charge of a very key McCain for President campaign area. The staffer has been contacted by "higher-ups" in the McCain camp asking him to explain his statements.
More details emerging...
According to one sourve in the DFW area Akbar has had past problems with the law including credit card fraud. And that he might in fact be on parole.
Just breaking... the McCain campaign at the highest levels has had an emergency conference call on the matter.
Full update this evening. Stay tuned...
Updates!!
Story breaks over at ThirdPartyWatch.com
At least one other Blog has reported on the breaking Akbar scandal. And ThirdPartyWatch.com has many additional and quite indicting details.
On his arrests:
Akbar has been arrested twice within the last year, the most recent this summer. His most recent arrests were for Credit Card Abuse and Burglary of a vehicle, as well as his convictions for theft. Akbar claims to have direct access with McCain.
On his ties to McCain directly:
Again, whether it can be pulled off is not the issue. What’s the issue is that this Ali A. Akbar has access to John McCain personally – oftentimes speaking directly with him on conference calls.
Statement from one of the two witnesses Joey Dauben of South Dallas:
I sat in on a meeting in my downtown Dallas office and heard an ecampaign staffer with the John McCain campaign – Ali A. Akbar – openly discuss ways to manipulate, rig and otherwise “take” an election
Akbar's postion with the McCain Campaign:
Akbar is the "E-Campaign Coordinator" fo
r the John McCain for President Campaign. He is listed on "Bloggers for McCain" as one of the 5 Authors. There's also a report that he's the graphics designer, or at least a contributing designer for McCain's main campaign website. In addition, he is a campaign spokesperson for the Texas McCain Campaign.
Info on the 3rd witness
The other witness and participant in the conference call, apart from Joey Dauben, was Chuck Geshlider from Las Vegas. Geshlider is a well-known national political activist in fringe Libertarian and Far-Right Conservative causes, most especially Separatist movements such as the Oceania Floating Island, New Hampshire's Free State Project and Texas Independence. Geshlider is a former Nevada State Chairman for the Ron Paul for President campaign.
Geshlider's latest venture is to recruit Ron Paulists to run for Congress nationwide. According to ThirdPartyWatch.com:
Geshlider is a stalwart (albeit annoyingly effective) Libertarian/Constitution Party member who has advocated for “Ron Paul Radicals” to run for U.S. Congress.
Update!!

How about this for BREAKING NEWS. Grassroots supporters working completely independently yesterday raised over $6 MILLION for Ron Paul in 24 hours, breaking all previous records raised for a political candidate. The Ron Paul campaign had set their goal for this quarter at $12 million. This goal was smashed yesterday with the campaign sitting pretty with over $18.2 million and counting. Considering the feable fundraising from the other Republican candidates, Ron Paul will have raised more than any other Republican contender this quarter.
More BREAKING NEWS. Andrew Sullivan endorses Ron Paul for President. Ron Paul For The Republican Nomination
Here is my favorite part of the endorsement:
"But the deeper reason to support Ron Paul is a simple one. The great forgotten principles of the current Republican party are freedom and toleration. Paul's federalism, his deep suspicion of Washington power, his resistance to government spending, debt and inflation, his ability to grasp that not all human problems are soluble, least of all by government: these are principles that made me a conservative in the first place. No one in the current field articulates them as clearly and understands them as deeply as Paul. He is a man of faith who nonetheless sees a clear line between religion and politics. More than all this, he has somehow ignited a new movement of those who love freedom and want to rescue it from the do-gooding bromides of the left to the Christianist meddling of the right. The Paulites' enthusiasm for liberty, their unapologetic defense of core conservative principles, their awareness that in the new millennium, these principles of small government, self-reliance, cultural pluralism, and a humble foreign policy are more necessary than ever - no lover of liberty can stand by and not join them.
He's the real thing in a world of fakes and frauds. And in a primary campaign where the very future of conservatism is at stake, that cannot be ignored. In fact, it demands support.
Go Ron Paul!"
I thought the alleged conversation about rigging ballots happened a month ago? That's what I thought Joey said in the comments on TPW, but perhaps I misinterpreted it.ww
too bad ron paul isn't 'conservative' under any past definition of the term, based on what he's campaigning as.
Jonathan, You said Ron Paul is not a 'conservative' under any past definition of the term, based on what he's campaigning as. You must be joking. Here's a video of Bush in his 2000 campaign sounding just like Paul: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MpTNdcM_e0&feature=related. And what happened to all those conservatives that talked about ending the Dept of Education, massive spending cuts, and returning to a Constitutional rule of law?
It seems to me Ron Paul is correct: the Republican Party has lost its way and forgotten its principles on what it stood for just a few years ago. Ron Paul is the true conservative, as Andrew Sullivan so clearly points out.
The amazing thing to me is how Ron Paul and his supporters are transforing the GOP from within and without, and get barely gets noticed by the mainstream media. It's an exciting time for those of us that love liberty and the foundations this great nation was built on to see the tide rising steadily for these ideas.
Morerice, stay on topic please. We appreciate you posting here, and even your flames. But your posts here are irrelevent to the topic at hand.
Eric, I see your point. So where do I recommend these "breaking news" items to be listed as topics in their own? IMHO they are HUGE news items for the libertarian republican movement.
Also, to keep things on topic and in perspective, I see this McCain "breaking news" topic about as important as McCain breaking wind, which we all know that old farts do quite often.
he's not an 'authentic conservative' under any definition, especially on Foreign Policy. He is an extremist on the issue, farther left than most leftist. much of his domestic stuff, while it may sound great, is completely impossible politically and impractical in other areas...like getting rid of Dept. of Education for example, politically impossible. If he's president, when he leaves office the Dept. of Education will still be there.
---------
on topic: This is intersting with McCain. Interesting timing also with the Lieberman endorsement and potential Centrist run coming down from them? I generally can't stand mcCain for the political game/maneuvering he plays as a "Maverick". But since I realize much of it is a positioning game, IF he gets elected I still think he's much better than Hillary/Obama/Edwards.
You know Morerice I kind of like you, because you stand your ground concerning your beliefs, even if I disagree with those beliefs.
"about as important as McCain breaking wind, which we all know that old farts do quite often."
- Morerice
That is way over the top! Senator McCain is a man of integrity and deep conviction. He is also a man who has sacrificed his tattered body for this nation. Tortured for years mercilessly, while students back home burned the American flag and spit on returning veterans.
I disagree with Senator McCain on issues such as immigration and campaign finance, but if it came down to it, I'd cast a ballot for a courageous man like that in a heartbeat.
I'm certain he would not be involved with voter fraud tactics, and should call on the carpet anyone from his campaign who advocates such dirty tricks.
As for Congressman Paul, I congratulate his campaign on the aggressive fundraising. They obviously are deeply passionate about their cause. Were it not for his horrific foreign policy positions, I wouldn't mind supporting him.
I really believe you should apologize Morerice for your remarks, or perhaps you shouldn't be welcomed back to LR.
Off topic Eric: Hugh Hewitt just did a nice smear job of Libertarian Republicans on Hannity and Colmes. He said that there have always been libertarians hanging around the Republican party, but that they tap out at ten percent or less. He made it perfectly clear that libertarians aren't really welcome in the party. While he's peddling his Romney book, he should research the history of his own party. The party is supposed to be based on libertarian ideals. HELLO, small government, does anyone in the party remember anymore?!
I'm linking to this.
Ryan, I will not apologize for my "breaking wind" comment about John McCain. In the tradition of Benjamin Franklin, I say lets all Fart Proudly! ;)
Eric, I mentioned this post on my blog and Ali Akbar left a comment:
If you need to contact me to find out the TRUTH my Born Again brother: aliunt@yahoo.com
Ali A. Akbar
http://bornagainredneck.blogspot.com/2007/12/mccain-voter-fraud-scandal.html
You have your facts wrong on his link to the official campaign. He is not associated with the campaign or the website. Perhaps you should have done your homework instead of publishing lies and trying to smear John McCain's campaign. Ali was working with bloggers for McCain which is not an official campaign site or activity.
Ryan, you said: "The [GOP] party is supposed to be based on libertarian ideals. HELLO, small government, does anyone in the party remember anymore?!"
I agree. And I think this partly explains why the Republicans lost so many seats in Congress this last year. The party as a whole have turned into big spenders, not only on foriegn fronts but also domestically.
Just look at the circus of GOP Presidential contenders and they are all fighting about how to out spend each other (with only one notable exception). All the celebrity contenders want to expand the role and size of governmentm, on just about every level, on foreign and domestic fronts. Small government conservatives like us are highly misrepresented in the GOP which only exacerbates this apathy within the GOP.
This "scandal" is unfortunate for McCain, but I don't think it will damage his campaign. Two things that undoubtedly will harm him: 1) amnesty for illegals, 2)McCain-Feingold. No way he could get the republican nomination.
